I'm having an annoying problem when editing various DVD's on my PC.
I am getting what I can only describe as a "blur" or shadows of where an object/person previously was, which looks VERY ugly when editing and compiling onto DVD- I am using DVD Decryptor 3.1.6.0 to get the DVD onto my PC.
I also have the same problem with my capture card - WinTV PVR250 - I capture in highest quality settings (MPEG2).
I have attached a small image to show you what I mean. Is there any way to stop this? Can I just add a filter and stop this shaddowing?
Please any help would be great![]()

I tried to attach an image but it didn't work
So I uploaded it here - http://www.btinternet.com/~dandyson1/help_stop_the_blur.jpg -
That is most likely interlacing. All video is interlaced. You can either attempt to deinterlace it, or you can just encode an interlaced DVD (or SVCD). If you are making a VCD, then you should probably deinterlace it.
There is an off chance that you have telecined film, but if that is a live event you capped, then it is interlaced video. However, if it is telecined film, then investigate inverse telecining.

Hello, thank you for your prompt response.
Yes I think the sources are indeed interlaced, which looks very ugly when viewed on a PC. I would like to make a VCD, so it needs to look good on PC as well.
So I need to deinterlace to remove the motion blur yes?
I had a fiddle with filters in VirtualDub but they all degraded the quality of the video somewhat, so do you have suggestions to which filter/settings I should use?
Thanks -
This looks like normal telecined material (which should not even display on a PC). What is your source? You say it's a DVD, then mention a capture card.
With more information, we could probably find out what you are doing wrong.ICBM target coordinates:

View your capture and see if all the frames are interlaed or do they appear in a 3:2 pattern (three progressive frames followed by two interlaced frames). If it follows the 3:2 pattern, then it is telecined. If it follows a 3:3 pattern or a 4:2 pattern, then it is telecined but more difficult since it may be progressive PAL telecined over NTSC.
I am betting it is interlaced all the way. Since you are going VCD, then you need to deinterlace it. Try the smart deinterlacing filter. It's about as good as you are goning to get. You could also try removing the even or odd field. There is no perfect solution.

Yeh the picture is off a DVD and this is where the problem is more obvious. Every frame is interlaced, so it looks ugly as hell when looking at it in VirtualDub.
I will look into the smart filter, and find a download for it, and try as you suggested. Thanks for that.
I also have similar problems with my capture card too, but not as noticeable.
When people rip DVD's onto PC, they seem to be deinterlaced and not have the problem i'm having, and yet they retain very high quality. I'm just after this quality but to compile my own VCD. -
Hello, yes thanks that filter is indeed very good. I used the default settings and it did work, although there is some slight pixellation now, but the blurring has gone!
I will fiddle with settings to try and optimize them. If anyone has other idea/suggesions i'm still open to any advise.
Thanks -
Rather than start a new topic, I'll add it onto here if it's ok....
I have a Sony TRV22E and use the video passthrough feature to capture VHS, as well as filming my own stuff.
I capture it onto my PC by firewire and use Windows Movie Maker's highest DV setting for optimum quality. This results in a huge filesize but highest picture quality. Now the picture quality is good (if a little bit dark) however when there is movement there is the annoying "blurring" effect again where you see a shaddow of where an object previously was?
Can this be stopped in the transfer from Camcorder to PC stage rather than use filter's afterwards?
How do people get such high quality videoclips or DVDs/capture for viewing on PC? Filesize is not really an issue to me, but I want to make a clip just for download on the net, so it needs to be deinterlaced and the movement shaddowing needs to be stopped.
o I have to use the same filters as before? Only problem is it seems to lower the quality of picture somehwat, which is what I want to try and maintain.
Please any advise is great! Thankyou...
