  1. Hi...So I am a bit confused/perplexed about the VR mode on my Pioneer dvd recorder. What type of Dvd Player will a DVD recorded in VR mode play on? I have had no luck with my Pioneer DVD player(Seperate from the recorder), A Samsung Dvd Player and 2 different DVD PC Computer programs.

I guess I just want to understand the VR mode a little more.

Thanks in Advance for your help and knowledge.

  2. All DVD players that play DVD-RAM discs will also play DVD-RW discs recorded in VR mode (it has to as DVD-RAM Recorders only support VR mode for DVD-RAM recording). Also, all DVD players with the "RW" logo are certified to play the VR mode recording format.

  3. Specifically, I know the SONY DVP-NS715P plays DVDs in the VR mode. Probably doesn't help you out too much.

The VR mode is not DVD-Video compliant, that's why you are having trouble playing it back in anything else. Ihave tried extracting the files from a VR mode DVD to re-author to a DVD-Video disc with no success. It appears to be a fairly proprietary format which is not very campatible.

To anyone interested, I have discovered a way to extract mpeg files from a VR mode disc to your HDD. The Cyberlink PowerProducer 2 app will do it. I just had this software bundled with my computer and decided to give it a try, and what do you know, it reads the files on the disc as easily as Video mode discs! Who would have thought?

If you simply want to play VR discs, PowerDVD will do it.

VR (Video Recording) mode is just another format for recording DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs. Mostly only standalone recorders can use this format. It's advantages are that you can edit the content of the disc or write-protect it. It's big disadvantage of course is that these discs won't play on most DVD players and even most computer apps won't recognize the disc in the drive (except as mentioned above). So when you find an app that will actually read one of these discs, it is a big deal.

  7. DVD+RW recorders use DVD+VR, which is totally different from what DVD-RAM/-RW recorders use (aka DVD-VR). Unlike DVD-VR, DVD+VR recorded discs are read by DVD players just fine.
