  3. you might try different dvd-r media..

but you can also try adjusting the POTS.. its a little white round disc towards the back of the dvd-rom drive. make sure you remember its original location prior to adjusting it, and make sure you only adjust it when the ps2 is off.

Try that link. there are severl FAQs dealing with laser cleaning and calibration in a PS2. No pictures though only test guides there.

Hey Jeex the pots are the potentiometers they control the amont of current going to the laser the 2 tiny metal screws that you can adjust using a multimeter and a pot adjuster.

That gear controls the height of the laser on the carriage assembly I think its called an azimuth gear if I am not mistaken.

    IMHO

You really should try to adjust the pots unless you are not capable of reading an original DVD. Pots are very sensative and if you go too far you can kill your laser or might not ever get it to read media correctly.

However adjusting the gear Just as you said would probably be something for him to try first. Its very easy to undo I ususally take a sharpie to put a mark for the gears original adjustment (at 12 o'clock straight up position) and just turn a few clicks at a time.

I would recommend a gear adjustment first and the pot adjustment as a last resort.

So do you hear any ticking?
Were all DVD-R reading properly initally?
    Did you chip it?
Is it going to the disk browser screen (screen with black disk/memory card)?
Are you gettting the RSOD (Red Screen of Death)?

Humh sound like its trying to recognize the disk since you are not getting the RSOD
Since you changed the laser it might be the chip double chek all the wires with multimeter and make sure you have firm connections.

Did you get a new laser or refurbished?
Did you desolder the ground straps? (if it was a new laser)

You only have to do this if you only got a laser if you got the black plastic assembly with it then this isnt necessary.

  11. it would probably cheaper to go and buy a DVD player at Target or Waly World than tryin to get it to play the dvdrs. V7 should play dvdrs, i know that my buddy's V2 doesnt play em for a fact, the laser isnt powerful enough, but my V5 plays em.
