What the hell is an "illegal floating decimal point error?"
I keep getting it whenever I try to convert some mpeg files.

There are bad frames in your movie. Try frameserv it to TMPGenc from virtual-dub, that worked for me. Or you have to cut the bad parts out.
Do a search for "Illegal Floting decimal point" in this forum and you'll get a lot of tips.
