Here's the first problem I noticed:

    CdRomPeripheral : LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1S iaStor Port 0 ID 1 DMA: Off
    CdRomPeripheral : SATA-DVD DROM6316 iaStor Port 0 ID 2 DMA: Off

Both your drives seem to be in PIO mode.

Which may be causing this error:

    CdRom3: SCSIStatus(x02) WinError(0) NeroError(-1046)
    Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)

    For PIO mode problems:

To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties>Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.

Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel the drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot. This will not damage any files on the computer.
I'd see if you can correct that and the error and the problem might go away.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks for the reply. Both of my drives are SATA running under Windows Vista. In bios it says that both drives are running in DMA mode.

Sorry, I missed the SATA part completely. And I even copied the 'SATA' part of the name.

With some research with the error part of the file:

    CdRom3: SCSIStatus(x02) WinError(0) NeroError(-1046)
    Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)

The Nero error seems to be: -1046=Illegal disc

But it can also relate to the SATA communication link to the burner. I found a similar error here:

    Specified host adapter invalid: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45942

    The suggested solution was:

Update your Nero to the latest version.
    Update the installed firmware.

All of which may not be any help at all. It could still relate to a disc problem, a communication problem or a burner problem. The disc part of it would be that the burner is using the wrong 'write' strategy for the media you are using. A firmware upgrade or different media may help with that. It sounds like you may have the most recent version of Nero. If so, I would try a different burning program, maybe ImgBurn, to see if you get an improvement. SATA optical drives are fairly new, so at least I have no experience with them.

  7. When SATA optical drives first came out, they had compatibility issues with non-Intel controller chipsets. I haven't kept informed on the subject. When I'm building a new PC, I can't see paying a premium for a SATA burner when SATA HDDs are cheaper than PATA...

You didn't specify your M/B, but I'm gonna suppose you have two sets of SATA connectors, one goes to the board's chipset controller, the other to an "external" controller (Promise, Silicon Image...). Connect your drive to the one that goes to the board's controller.

I'm not sure what type of motherboard it is. It is a HP Pavilion with 6 SATA connectors on the M/B.

I also checked the manufaturer of both the Memorex and TDK media that I have and they both come up with RitekF1. Is there a way to tell the manufacturer before buying?

Some SATA DVD burners don't work well with the mobo SATA controllers especially when using a non intel controller chipset mobo. My suggestion to you is to burn with IMGBURN. You can also use the SMART BURN software that's specifically for LITEON dvd burners.

If you still get the same errors using IMGBURN then your drive can be defective or the drive isn't compatible with the SATA controller chipset on your mobo. Someone else had a similar problem and they solved it by using a new SATA cable and connecting it to another SATA port on the mobo. Good luck and report back.

Here's the link to download SMART BURN from codeguys website. You may also post your problem at the LITEON FORUM at Cdfreaks.com.

    http://codeguys.rpc1.org/utilities.html

I've got 2 SATA dvd burners. I have my LGH62L on Core2duo computer that has a intel controller chipset on the mobo. Then I have my PIONEER 212 on a PCI SATA controller card in my AMD socket 462 computer. Both drives burn with no problems.

I have used the Smart Burn utility and it seems to recognize all of the media that I have tried but I still am unable to burn anything. I have tried different programs to try to burn with but they all fail. The only media I have had success with is some old Sony DVD+R 8x that I had lying around. I have tried different SATA ports on my motherboard and no luck.

I have posted also CDFreaks.com per your suggestion. Thanks.

Buy a new SATA cable. What's the model number of your HP computer? That way we can find out what motherboard you have. If after everything else you have tried and you still have failed burns then return the drive.

Thanks for posting the HP specs. DISABLE RAID in your mobo BIOS. This is a common problem when SATA dvd burners are installed. Just go into your BIOS and disable it.

When I go into BIOS to disable RAID I have three options, [IDE - RAID - AHCI]. When I try to change to IDE I am unable to boot my computer. It just keeps restarting. I am able to select AHCI but I get the same error when tryin to burn with Nero. Any suggestions? Thanks for all the help so far.

Your welx for the help! Just disable the RAID in your BIOS, there's nothing else to change. There should be a setting where you can disable/turn off the RAID. Can you find out from HP the manufacturer of your motherboard? It would be helpful to know if it's manufactured by ASUS, ABIT, FOXCONN, GIGABYTE, etc. Unfortunately your SATA controller chipset may be the problem but to rule that out you could buy a SATA PCI CARD. Then attach your SATA dvd burner to that SATA PCI card.

This is one of the reasons why I hate prebuilt computers. Some manufacturers like DELL & HP will only allow you to adjust the BIOS to a certain extent or none at all.

    I must be blind!
As I suspected it's a mobo that is modified by ASUS for HP.

Scot808:Your HP pc comes RAID READY. IMHO the best way to test if your drive is defective is to buy a SATA PCI CONTROLLER card. Hopefully you have a PCI SLOT available to install the SATA PCI CONTROLLER card. Here's a SATA PCI CONTROLLER card if you got a COMPUSA in your town.

    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&N=200087+4294965313&Ne=300...l_ATA_PCI_Card

I have that same SATA PCI CONTROLLER card which has my PIONEER 212 & SAMSUNG 183L SATA dvd burners connected to it. No probs in burning.

I'd go with a PCI SATA controller also. Just simplifies things. You likely won't find much info on that motherboard as it is custom built for HP. You may find something in the Asus consumer line that compares closely if you want to do some digging.. This is one discussion of that HP motherboard that may give you some insight: http://www.howtofixcomputers.com/bb/ftopic212450.html

Budz, I purchased the SATA PCI Controller that you recommended and tried it out burning a SONY DVD-R at 12x and it failed again. This time it said that the burn was aborted. Any other suggestions? Thanks again.

From reading that log DMA is not enabled. Which SATA port is your drive on? I was researching your mobo the other night and I did see you have 6 SATA connections. Also I did read how there are problems with your mobo with regard to disabling RAID.

Have you tried contacting HP about disabling RAID? I seriously think your issue is the controller chipset on your mobo. RAID has to be disabled in order for the SATA dvd burner to work correctly. I'm busy at the moment building a new computer for a relative. So when I have some free time I'll look up those links I read about your ASUS HP mobo. In the mean time try contacting HP about the RAID.

I have the drive connected to PCI SATA card in port 1. In Device Manager it says that the current transfer mode is in Ultra DMA mode 5. I don't know any other way to change it.

I have contacted HP and they say that they need to escalate my issue about turning off RAID to the REsearch and Development team. They are supposed to be getting back to me. The one option they came up with was to reinstall Windows VIsta on a spare Harddrive with RAID disabled and try from there to see if it works. If so then I will have to reload everything back on my system again and go from there. I only want to try that as a last resort because it will be a pain trying reload everything.

I really appreciate all the help and ideas you have given me. Thanks.

  26. Recently this very subject has become a mild focus of interest for me.

I beat the piggie till thirty bucks fell out and bought a white box drive from the local barely making a living geek shop. The drive an Aopen 1812p originaly with firmware 32 was finaly updated to firmware 34 (set xp to PIO and boot in safemode for xflash to work).

However, this did not solve the problem. I had tried nero 7.10.1.xx update and the 4.9 something nerovision to write an image to maxell 18x DVD+R disks. I did make about 30 coasters with various combinations of setting changes.

Primarily, I noticed someone previously posting did identify one of those cryptic neroerror's

I am seeing 1064, 500, and I think I rmember seeing a 1066 in one line. The errors did not seem to vary if the drive was set to PIO or DMA.

I thought I would drop in the local barely making a living geek shop and pick up a new drive cable and see if that would clear it up.

But, my hopes are not real high. I have seen something similar on the back room computer an out of the box compaq using both the bulk pack cheap maxell disks and some outrageously expensive JVC DVD-R disks that was a gift from an unknowing relative that had good intentions but was robbed by BestBuy.

Down to the meat of the matter. That neroerror code list. Is that a private thing? I do not seem to find anything on three different search engines.
