    Memorex 32023282, BWSE firmware.

Have burned successfully many times in past. Last good burn was to a Imation DVD-RW, just the other day.

Tried some TDK DVD-R discs (CMC MAG AM3) - got Illegal Disc errors
Did a little research and found that Verbatim are supposed to be good.
Tried some of those (MCC 03RG20) discs (DVD-R) and same thing = Illegal Disc errors

Tried both Nero 6 and Nero 8, DVDShrink, and a few others. Nothing....

This is a simple 1.2GB DVD burn of VIDEO_TS files.

Yes, this is a 4-year old drive, and these are 16X discs. So if that won't work, where can I get some discs that will work? I don't care if it burns at 1X or 4X or whatever....

My guess is that Shrink is using Nero, so burning with Shrink doesn't test anything.

You might try a firmware update for your drive, if one exists. These can often allow older drives to burn newer media, even though it may be at reduced speeds. I had to do this to get my old NEC drive to burn with newer 16x media.

You may have to consider that fact the drive is on it's last legs and needs to be replaced. They don't last forever.

    BWSE firmware *is* the latest.
4 years old is "on it's last legs"?
That just doesn't make sense. This drive has only burned 3 or 4 discs a year.

Drives get dirty sucking dusty air thru them for several years. You could try cleaning it, but new drives are cheap so it's not worth much time or trouble. Get a new one!

Sorry, but Memorex drives weren't that great when new. And these were of the vintage of the old Panasonic, Plextor and Toshiba drives that I own - which when burn speed was rated at 4X and the disc was 8X - still only burned at 2X to 4X because they were prone to burn errors. You may even have to research as to if the type and brand of media are compatible if you want to continue to use this drive. Heck, for the price of media or less: You can buy a new drive. Newegg is your friend (as is Frys, etc.).

That just doesn't make sense. This drive has only burned 3 or 4 discs a year.
Drives get dirty sucking dusty air thru them for several years. You could try cleaning it, but new drives are cheap so it's not worth much time or trouble. Get a new one!
Still doesn't make sense. Why would it burn fine to a cheap Imation DVD-RW disc just the other day, and not to a "good" Verbatim DVD-R disc?

At least it isn't making coasters. It fails before starting the burn.

old drives don't have the burning strategies necessary for newer discs. unless there is a new firmware update within the last year, you will never correctly burn newer discs because they aren't listed in the drives lookup table.

$20 will bring you up to date.

Fine, back to my original question...

I'm surprised Detroit hasn't picked up on this marketing scheme... "Sorry sir, we only sell gasoline, oil, and tires for 2007 and later models..."

Chances are you won't find them in many places, as discs are a high volume item and turn over rapidly. Given you can replace the drive for the price of a spindle of quality discs, why bother wasting time and effort trying to hunt down someone's old stock ?

If you really must go looking, the most likely places are crappy little corner stores and service (gas ?) stations that carry lots of crap along with fuel, and hope they have some dusty spindles of old, low quality no-name brands on a shelf somewhere.

    smackypete,

Your drive may not have burned many disks in its' lifetime, but the media on the market has changed quite a bit since the last available firmware for the drive. Even older, slower rated disks (that may have worked fine in the past) are likely to have new dye formulations that the firmware wasn't set up for. That means trial and error of different media is about all you have to work with, which could get much more expensive than replacing the current drive with a new one that works with the media available at this time.
Still doesn't make sense. Why would it burn fine to a cheap Imation DVD-RW disc just the other day, and not to a "good" Verbatim DVD-R disc?
It sounds like the firmware had a sound write strategy for the Imation DVD-RW, but not for the Verbatim DVD-R. The drive (itself) isn't the problem, it's the outdated firmware in the drive, and its' inability to cope with current media, that's causing you grief.

I see this thread represents your first posts here, so welcome to VideoHelp.
