  1. I have a Pioneer A05 burner. Thinking of getting a standalone DVD recorder that only records on +R/+RW media.

Will my -R drive be able to read them? I can't find anything in the specifications that says it does.

  3. So you think it's a software issue and not hardware?

panther is the only option that offers +r support to a mac.
thus, having panther will increase the chances of your mac being able to support/use the +r media

I can read +R fine in the A05 connected firewire to my G4 if I'm in 9.2, but the files are greyed out in OS X (10.0 I'm pretty sure..its at work and I can't check now)..I also get "will not play" type message from the PLAYER

The Apple DVD player doesn't pop up automatically (wonder why-maybe cause its in a firewire box?)) but otherwise +R's by FUJI and KHYPER MEDIA (ugh!) have been fine in 9
in the A05 but not in apple's internal DVD-ROM (no disc mounts)

agreed, an external drive will increase the chances of the disk mounting, but like you said, mounting is only a part of the process.
Panther has been really amazing for me with +r disks. I have been able to mount them, access files and even play them in Apple dvd player.

couldnt dream of this in 10.2
Now to just upgrade to the DVR-106!!!!!

I installed a Pioneer A106 internally in my G4 and under 10.2 it will write DVD+R/RW discs, but will not read them. My iBook with a Combo drive will read DVD+R discs (also 10.2). Waiting on my free copy of Panther from Apple, so I'm still using Jaguar for the moment. Does anyone know if the DVD+R discs that I have recorded under Jaguar will be any different than if they were burned in Panther?

Oh I plan to. I'm just waiting on two things:
    1. ALL of the audio software and hardware that I use to be Panther-compliant (I do audio work professionally, so I can't have the downtime).
    2. My Apple rep (I'm a dealer) to send me my free NFR copy of Panther.

I can't wait. Especially for Expose. That is such a cool feature for someone using Logic or any other audio/MIDI app.

You could keep Jaguar installed on another disk or partition and start up from it when you need to use the audio apps. Other than ProTools, what apps aaren't Panther ready?

yes, i have jag still on my other HD. i go into it every once and a while still. There are a few things panther has problems with for me.
    1. scanner drivers
    2. printer drivers

they just dont work. I have generic for printer but its not as good as the real deal. so for my picture perfect prints i go back into jaguar.

id recommend keeping it if you have the ability to

I've been hearing about a multitude of small incompatabilities even among software that is supposed to be Panther-compliant, including Logic 6.3.1, but the main thing is the hardware drivers, some of which aren't ready yet. As for Digidesign, maybe they'll be ready for Panther by the time OS11 comes out.

Whenever you install panther, make certain to disconnect FIREWIE drives with OXFORD911 or (especially)922 chipsets..
Os 10.3 has been frying data and rendering chipsets unusable!http://www.macintouch.com/panfirewire.html
