I'm only getting 4x on my old LiteOn, and I find it somewhat annoying to wait a half hour for it to rip.

Yes some newer models rip faster like the SAMSUNG drives but you can actually use a hacked firmware developed by CoDeKing to read & burn even faster. Time for you to buy a new dvd burner!
4x ripping is way too slow for me. I feel your pain.

How fast you can rip depends on which new burner you buy but you also need a drive that can rip at high speed without errors. I have three LGs (GSA-4166B, GSA-H10N, and GSA-H42N) that I love to use for burning but are way too slow for ripping. Through advice from this forum, I bought a Samsung SH-S202G IDE burner for less than $30.00 from Newegg and it is what I use for ripping. In most cases, I can now rip a dual-layer dvd in less than 15 minutes, on occasion, less than 10 minutes and the Samsung is not only fast, but accurate. I have read many posts praising the speed and overall quality of the Pioneer DVR-112 and DVR-115 burners as well as some of the Lite-On models. My guess is that you would have a difficult time finding anything slower than what you now have, so your options are wide open.

I like my Pioneer 112D, but the RIP speed is only average. My Samsung SH203B on the other hand, is the fastest ripping drive I've ever used.
