Sony DRU-510A and Veritas DLA with Memorex DVD-RW - Help

I'm finally getting around to using my DRU-510A. I want to use a Memorex DVD-RW disc as a filesystem to backup important data on my machine.

I have a P4, 2.4 w/512MB

I'm using Veritas DLA v3.58 (I tried v3.6 too) and cannot get a format to complete. When I right click on the DRU-510A, DLA is checked. I click on the Format option to format the -RW disc. The format says it'll only take 1minute, 23seconds. About halfway in (40sec) I get an error message saying the format failed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should recording data to a DVD disc be simple if the drive supports the many available formats? Not in my case.

I think your media is to blame in this case as far as not being able to format your disc for use with DLA. I have a Sony DRU500AX and utilize TDK DVD+RWs for DLA. I have also used Fujifilm CDRWs. No problems whatsoever. From what I've read and heard, the "+" format is better suited for data storage. But, in your case, I still think the brand itself is to blame. Although, I've burned Memorex DVDRs with no problems in the past. Try some different media. Besides, if you are storing important or critical files, spending a little more for quality media shouldn't be an issue.

*Oh...I haven't changed/upgraded the firmware(2.0c) that was installed on my drive when I purchased it.

I'll take your advice (jester1x) and see if I can find Fuji or TDK +RW media. I'll post a response when I get to it over the weekend.

I also have Sony 510A and had problems with Memorex DVD+RW.
After burning for 99% it used to error out. Used Nero. Other media
works fine.

Media definitely makes a difference. Veritas DLA doesn't work worth a crap on Memorex CDRW or DVD-RW media. I bought FujiFilm media (DVD+RW) and DLA now formats the DVD+RW disc.

Amazing how one media works and the other doesn't, esp. when the drive supports all formats. This technology isn't mature.

There are differences between Memorex and Memorex

For example:
Memorex 2.4xDVD+RW [RICOHJPNW01]
Memorex 2.4xDVD+RW [CMC MAG.W01]
Memorex 2.4xDVD+RW [INFODISCA01]
Memorex 4xDVD+RW [RICOHJPNW11]
Memorex 4xDVD+RW [CMC MAG.W02]

I've been using the first one (some overwritten 100 times) on my Ricoh5125 without problems

Softwares, firmwares, drivers also make a difference

Be careful when you buy Memorex 2.4xDVD+RW [INFODISCA01]. It didn't
work for me. It used to error out at 99%. Used Sony 510A and Nero.
