I have spent two days reading on this forum and have not come across any discussions on fixing corrupted PCM files.. so I apologise ahead of time if this has been discussed.

I am well aware ripping chapters by OSex causes problems with AC3 files.. which I learned to use "fix" with mAC3dec.

Last night I ran into my first PCM audio file that was corrupted. mAC3dec quits when I try to use the PCM file.. which make sense since it is called mAC3dec and not mPCMdec.

    1. So how does one go about fixing PCM files? Hexedit? If so how?
    2. If a DVD is encoded with a PCM file instead of AC3.. is there anything that can be done during the extraction process to avoid the PCM file?

    1) You could try QuickTime Pro for that PCM audio file, exporting as Sound to AIFF. Uncompressed AIFF is just PCM in an AIFF container. I'm not sure if it will work, though, and have no experience working with PCM files. Beyond that, some sound editing app like Amadeus II or Sound Studio or something might work better.
    2) No, there is no way to rip AC3 audio from a DVD containing only PCM audio. You could avoid the PCM audio by not ripping it, but you probably want the soundtrack.

Thanks for the tips wiseweasel... unfortunately no go on those routes

    1. Quicktime pro wont recognise the file.. it is grey out.. if I double click on it.. it says not a file quicktime recognises.

    2. Sound Studio would not open it.. the import function however did see it but nothing happened

    3. Amadeus would not open it either.. did however import it.. but it was junk.. I played with varous bit rates and frequencies.. still the same thing..

I am a persistent bugger.. but I think I am just going to have to forgoe this disc and move on

Just out of curiosity, is this a commercial DVD movie? If so, which movie is it? Why are you trying to extract chapters? You might try using DVDExtractor 0.9b for OS9, either by booting in OS 9 if your computer supports it, or by using it in Classic mode under Panther. If you can get that working, put it in scene mode, and select the scenes you want to extract, check 'merge selected' if you want to combine chapters, and see what it does. DVDExtractor has MUCH better chapter (scene) support than OSEx, and is much less likely to corrupt the pieces. If you want to split the DVD over two DVD-R discs, some other options might be possible.

0Sex corrupts PCM audio when you rip to elementary streams, and theres no setting in that software that can help avoid it. There is a program called SoundHack (I think) that can help fix PCM header info, but I never had success with that.

As WiseWeasel wrote, the only way to get DVDs with PCM audio ripped correctly is to rip with DVDExactor. Up until recently it was only available for OS 9 -- and would only run properly in OS 9 (so if you come across this version, it works properly in Classic mode inside Panther, but not Jaguar). Now there is an OS X version, and it also works quite well.

Soundhack does open the file but not sure what to do with it afterwards.. it says sound file has no header... fix with header change.

I searched for OS X version of DVD extractor but only came up with version .9 beta... do you know where I can find the OS X version

I apologize, I have my tools mixed up ... I need a vacation!

You will still need DVDExtractor 0.9 to rip the DVD with PCM audio. I was thinking of a tool you would use AFTER DVDExtractor is used. However as I said before, if you have Panther, DVDExtractor 0.9 for OS 9 works in Classic mode (but not in Classic mode for Jaguar).

Once you've ripped, you can convert the .PCM file to .AIFF with PCMtoAIFF (versions for both OS 9 and X). The OS 9 version also works in Panther-Classic, but not in Jaguar-Classic. The OS X version should work in all versions of X.
