2nd Sony DRU-510a will not play DVD movies or read the soft disk that came with the drive.
When I play a commercial DVD the picture is pixellated. This is the third drive I have tried.
Also when copying a disk either music or data I end up with errors on the verification part.
The software disk that came with the drive that contains all the software will not run. It causes a software crash that says the Macromedia projector has caused a fault. But when I try the same disk in my DVD Rom drive it works without any problems at all (take it out of the Sony after the error message and insert into DVD Rom drive and it plays straight away). This is the strange and confusing bit.
I have checked all cables, deleted both the Sony and my DVD rom out of the Device Manager. Uninstalled all CD/DVD writing software from my PC. Loaded RecordNow DX in safe mode as suggested by Sony but, still the same problems.
I also installed a brand new Hard drive with a new copy of Windows XP Home, downloaded all the latest patches etc. The only software that I loaded was RecordNow DX. But still the same problem.
Sony say that I am either extremely unlucky or there is something on my PC that is causing the problem.
Has anybody else come across this before. Or do any of you have any ideas?
Thanking you in anticipation.

Wow.....you sure are unlucky if you got three bad drives.
Did you confirm the jumper settings on the back of the drive?
What about the bios settings for the channel that the drive is on?
What about your power supply? Is it large enough for the job?
Hard to believe you would get three bad drives. -

Iceman, was this a full version of Win XP or the upgrade, and if it was an upgrade was it over Win 98 or Win ME. All your hardware looks very good, just wondering if you had ever fiddled with updating the chipset drivers? Have you ever updated or still just running with what came with the board?

Windows XP install was a full version.
I downloaded all chipset drivers that were available a couple of nights back, but still no luck. [/quote] -
What kind of computer is this? Did you put a ASPI layer on e.g. forceaspi?
did you look at the controller properties in the system menu to make sure they aren't set to PIO mode? -

Set to Ultra DMA in device manager and bios.
The drive is being picked up by Sony tomorrow. I will wait for a new one from them.
Thank you to everyone who has tried to help. I will let you all know what happens when I get my replacement drive. -
Good News I have a solution
After getting the latest versions of all my software and Hardware a friend on mine asked me about the chipset maker - ALi. I emailed them and they offered the following solution......
"1. After powering up, press DEL key to enter BIOS Setup Utility.
2. Change setting for Secondary Slave where your SONY DVDRW installed to be
"Ultra DMA Disabled"
3. Save & Exit
4. In Device Manager of WinXP, you can set Secondary Slave of IDE channel
to be "DMA if available"
If this SONY DVDRW is running at UDMA mode, it would fail at reading.
It is okay on writing (or burning). Which means if you set this DVDRW as
Ultra DMA Enabled in BIOS Setup, you can burn it by DVDRW and read it by
another DVDROM.
But if you want to use this DVDRW to read and write (burn), just set it as
above steps."
It works and now I can finally play with my DVD Writer. -
Good to see a solution:
But this has convinced me again never to buy a mother board with ALI chipset
I once had a VIA chipset
Now I'm all intel..works for video addicts without tweaking :-)
