  1. Curiousity has led me to post this topic. I personally use a Pioneer DVD-120 for reading to my ripping software at 16x. Any success stories out there?

Side note, seems DVD Shrink3.0 b5 crashes alot with that drive and not my burners external drive? Unknown errors.

  2. I have a Lite-On 165 - I often see rip speeds in excess of 8x for dual layer discs and single layers regularly peak at a little above the 16x mark. A lot depends on the disc in question, of course.

It's a consistent performer (now superseded by the 166), no problems with any software or hardware configurations to date.

Very fast audio extraction thrown in to the bargain too.

I've got a Lite-On 16x as well, and rip at 10x-13x consistently, with some discs going to 15-16x.

I also have a Raite 8x that generally rips at 5-7x, with some discs peaking at 8x.

What he said. And yes the CD audio extraction is quite nice on the drive. I rip MP3s with CD Buzzcutter and its like a rocketship on my Liteon.

Liteon's DVD readers (16x) tend to be excellent. The Panasonics are also quite nice.

  6. I had a problem with one !

It was a golden oldie, granted. My Matsushita SR-8586 was a bugger when it came to reading recordable media. It was fine with pressed discs, however. The new ones are probably A1.

  7. I have a Lite-On 166 that rips 2 layer dvd's in 15 mins. Peak at aaround 8x. single layer dvds take 5 mins with 15x. no joke.

Too bad it's quite difficult to find 1 layer dvd's any more
