PIONEER 112D would be a good choice at the moment. It's riplocked so to increase read speed you'll need to use MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT program. Or you can buy a LITEON 18x or 20x speed dvd burner which is fast at ripping discs.

They are all about equal, it just boils down to price and brand preference.

    Others recommend a Lite-On - agreed.
Also - look around for a Benq 1650 or 1655.
If you can pick one up cheap, they are great drives also.
    Maybe EBay?

I agree with you 100%.I think the media brand is more important than the burner these days

I agree with the media being more important. I have two of the 20X lite ons and i never burn at speeds more then 6X for videos. if you burn at these 16 to 20x you will have more playback problems on a set top dvd player. So what is the real sense of these speeds. I think they are just trying to impress each other by seeing who can make the fastest burner.

Some brands are more media tolerant than others - even today.

If you check the media reports on this site, you can see whether the brands of media you are likely to use are likely to be compatible with the drive.

Of course you can also follow the advice of many posters and limit your media choices to TY and Verbatim. In which case almost every drive will work.

I buy whats on sale at local retailers and burn at full speed. No coasters, no freezes. At this point I have burned thousands of DVDs and a few hundred CDs.

I use Taiyo Yuden and verbatim and i also use sony dvd-r's that are in the 100 pack. these are made in taiwan and i have had no issues with these. The sony's in the 50 pack are made in malaysia and i have had problems with them. A lot of write fails. I use the Sony's 100 packs a lot because they are frequently on sale at best buy and staples. I have burned thousands of video dvd with these sony's with no problems.
