  1. Hi all.

I'm converting Simpsons episodes (.avi) to DVD compliant MPG's using TMPGEnc Plus

Now what I'm wondering, is how big I should make the MPG's.

Obviously I don't want to lose quality, but I also don't want to "over-encode" it.

i.e. using a higher bitrate than necessary. Because then I'd just be wasting space on the DVD.

So how can I find the ideal bitrate where I'm not losing quality, but also not encoding at a higher bitrate than required?

    Thanks,

    Cam

The AVI is capable of being better than the DVD quality
so why not go at highest DVD quality...this practically speaking would mean a VIDEO bitrate of 8million bits per sec with audio at 384 or 224

If this stutters on some of your players, i'll suggest the setting of 6million bits wihich'll play on LAPTOPS and other resource challenged DVD playback systems

  3. What resolution did you capture in? I find 352x480 2520max ~2000Avg 300Min VBR produces good small file size movies. I bet you could get around 10 episodes / DVD.

But I'd say... Encode the same minute clip with different rates, burn em on a RW, and see for your self.

what the heck. don't go wasting bits like that. dude, using some optimised templates like the KDVD ones, you can do a whole lotta shiz on one DVD.

Yup, since there's not a lot of color variation.
