Hi all,
After I capture my DV footage to AVI via my firewire even though the output is huuuuge the quality when I play it at full screen is still blocky, how can this be? when I convert the AVI using TMPEG to DV PAL (720 res) and play it using PowerDVD the quality is significantly better!! Why is the reencoded file better than uncompressed raw AVI?!?????

Playing the compressed file requires much less processor power and HD performance

My guess is that you have installed a DV codec that can be configured to give a low quality /high speed representation of the image.
MotoDV used something like this to allow editing DV files with premiere 5.1.
The Digital Origin and (I'm not 100% sure) the Canopus codec have such an option.
This should explain why when Tmpeg reads the file directly can produce a good quality output.

With most capture devices, I use Premiere 6, you can select the codec at source, (just edit the settings). As the material came from DV, using a DV codec won't compress any further. At the end of the day the result will be the same as the way you're doing it(through TMPGenc) but missing that stage out will save time, and won't fill up the HD so quickly.

My system is a 1.4 Athlon so should be poweful enough to run an AVI smoothly. It seems that the actual quality is slightly blocky. I have downloaded the huyyuff codec but the program I use (Presto videoworks) does not allow me to capture as hyyuff format. Is there a capture program - preferably freeware , that you can select the codec of the AVi to capture??/

How about your graphic card ? It comes into the bandwidth picture too.
