  1. CloneDVD has been released!

Here is a link to the download.

    http://www.elby.ch/en/products/clone_dvd/index.html

I'm running it now on About Schmidt, which is about 2 hours long. I'll post the results.

Regardless of the outcome quality wise, this software wins hands down for the user interface. It's pretty slick.

Perhaps you can try using DVD Decrypter in ISO mode and RIP a single IMAGE file then "mount" the IMAGE file with Daemon Tools and select that as your SOURCE when using CLONE DVD

Should work though I haven't tried CLONE DVD yet.

is it me, or you can deselect any extra you don't want ? Do it corect IFO files or just like IC7 it corupt them ? if it corect them, I think this software will kill DVD2one

  5. I just made my first test with CloneDVD, and overal, i'm impress !

I have made David Gilmour DVD cos it's a show and have lot of light, so it's easyer to see the quality since the bitrate need to be higher to not get block.

    Movie itselft is 5.84gig
    Extra are 1.63gig.

I used DVD Decrytor in file mode to rip the movie

I selected Clone DVD option to get a full DVD.. first surprise, you can unselect some extras ! nice.. but is it work ? will tall about that later

After about 25 minutes (not sure exactly, I just left the PC while it worked) I got a 4.33gb output which is a nice size

The movie with 5.1 track are 4.25gb.

Video Quality. As far as I can see, the video quality is MUCH better than DVD2one (I won't compare with DVDShrink since I didn't used it much) Color are very rich and don't have any block. you can see a litle down in the quality on close up when you pause the movie,, but when paying, there is no quality problem that my eyes can see. So, video quality wise, this software blow DVD2one and maybe even Instant copy 7 !! will test some other disk (mainly CGI or anim to really see the compression) but for my first test, CloneDVD blow DVD2one and IC7 video quality.

Audio quality is untutched.. even if you can reencode it if I understand right.. but I don't see why I would like to downsaple the sound since 5.1 is very important to me..

Extras. Now it's very interesting and it was a great surprise and a bit deception. as you can see, the movie was 4.25gb and final size is 4.33gb. so extra, even removed took 81mb of the space.. so not a bad deal ! better than DVDShrink still image option ! so, I start the DVD.. and it work ! so IFO are corected ? no ! and here is the down side of the software.. if you unselect something (ie: extras) the software remove all video and audio and replace it by a gray screen.. (good thing) but the software don't tweek ifo beside information for audio track. so, if your extra is running for 45minutes, then you will see a gray screen for 45minutes ! but it's not a big deal since you can skip them anyway.

So, all in all, this software is a beast ! it totally blow DVD2one and even IC7. (will not say DVDShrink since it's free and still under big devlopement) The compression quality is awersome, you can remove extra and will take praticly no space, and it's fast..

Best software used yet.. will definitly buy it ! really worth it and DVD2one will be deleted from my system as soon as I get the full version.

  8. Hi all

I've just done a comparison test between CloneDVD and DVD Shrink v2.3.

    Movie: "The Majestic", R2, PAL.

Movie-only; kept AC3 5.1 English only; kept English, Italian, French and Spanish subtitles (I have quite a few friends from these countries )

I tested the results on my 17" EIZO LCD monitor at its native resolution of 1280x1024.

    Normal viewing, no zooming:

DVD Shrink had better results. Both softwares created artifacts (similar to a light jpeg compression), barely noticeable with DVD Shrink (where they existed at all), but more pronounced with CloneDVD.

    Full screen, pan & scan:

The difference between the 2 softwares gets even more obvious.
DVD Shrink clearly doing a better compressing job.

Now something that really surprised me.
Last night I also did a backup of the same movie, selecting the same audio and subtitles with DVD2DVD-R/CCE, 2 vbr passes.
I guess most of you are gonna doubt what I'm gonna say next, but what the heck!!??

DVD Shrink came extremely close to the DVD2DVD-R!!!
Overall, DVD2DVD-R had a slight edge, but there were scene where it was very hard to differentiate between the two (even in full screen, pan & scan). Some scenes actually looked better with DVD Shrink, where some of the original "grain" had been slightly smoothed.

    My conclusion:

I think the difference in quality between CloneDVD and DVD Shrink is big enough to show during normal viewing on an average 32" widescreen tv, and will be even more obvious on top of the range HDTVs or Plasma TVs.

I don't think the difference in quality between DVD Shrink and DVD2DVD-R/CCE will show on an average 32" widescreen tv, but it might (to a certain extent) on HDTVs or Plasma ones.

This test was only conducted on one movie, and the results might obviously be different with others. But I doubt it.

  9. Just did a second test.. this one was Animatrix !

But I won't explain how is the quality. I have made IC7 copy first then DVD2one backup after few week ago... I just made the backup with CloneDVD full DVD. you can see screenshot here.. make your own opinion

    http://www.magietec.com/animatrix/

pictures are 180k to 250k uncompressed..

  10. vric, would you care to make the same test with DVD Shrink v2.3?

Forget that, sorry. I'd actually be more interested in seeing the original frame included in your test.
It's hard to tell if what you call "noise" is not actually on the original too, and simply "smoothed-out" by a lesser quality compression.
I for one prefer the DVD2One image. It looks sharper then the others.

  12. Sorry vric, I edited my previous post while you were replying to it.

I would still very much like to see the results of a DVD SHrink test, I just didn't want to ask too much.

  13. don't worrie, DVDShrink copy was in progress when you asked.. it's near completation.. I can asure you, the original DVD is perfect no noise at all (direct digital transfer like Toy story, Monster inc and others)

so the noise you see isn't there on the real dvd

Edit: just updated with DVDShrink... and I don't have any space left on my server.. will need to wait about 1 week for the orriginal when I will delete a customer's web site.. sorry

  14. vric & ddlooping,

I'm basicly a newbie here but got a question for ya. Got my LaCie Pioneer 105(a05) burner 2 months ago and I've only backed up 5 dvd's in all. I used dvd decrypter to rip, dvd2one to strip extras and menu's(no compression used), Imgtool to create .iso, dvd decryter to burn.

Do ya'll thing dvd2one could introduce noise in the video if no compression is used? I ask because my finished products all seem to have a slight bit more grain the the original, but just slightly. I'm watching on a 57 inch hd widescreen set with a new panasonic player with the Sage/Genises FLI2200 deinterlacing chip with Faroudjas DCDi technology.

how do you select no compression with DVD2one it's imposible
    Quote Quote
  16. Well, from my unstanding, occording to the following quote from the dvd2one forums FAQ thread
QWhat happens if the movie is smaller then 4.37 Gb
ANothing, DVD2one just builds a new IFO and rearranges the VOBS while removing your unwanted subtitles/audio streams
No compression is used if the file is small enough to fit on 1 dvd. So I just choose the main movie, ac3 5.1/2.0 and english subtittles and they all equal much less than 4.3gig.

  18. Hello again

I thought I'd post screen captures of my DVDClone / DVD Shrink 2.3 test.

    http://www.poker-faces.com/temp/dvdclone-shrink1.html

    http://www.poker-faces.com/temp/dvdclone-shrink2.html

As usual when doing frame comparisons, the difference in quality is not as pronounced during normal viewing, but it's still very much noticeable.

P.S: the grey scale at the top of each page is not based on anything scientific scale.
I'd just be interested in knowing at what point (number) you start seeing a difference between each shade.
So that you know, I can see the difference between number 1 and 0 (black) on my 17" EIZO LCD monitor, but I have to get fairly close to the screen.

great comparison, vric!! The "noise" v "sharpness" issue is interesting, like what you see in digital photography (when you sharpen an image it increases the apparent noise). I don't have any idea of how it applies to DVD copying.

Thanks again for the comparison. I ripped animatrix last night, was going to copy with InstantCopy, but now I think I'll pass!!

A1 and B1 on both pages are from the DVD Shrink captures.
A2 and B2 are from CloneDVD.

P.S: and for those of you interested, here are a couple more tests I made.

  24. WHy does dvd shrink duplicate animatrix episodes....it puts em in the extras pane and main movie.
and in the extras pane it looks like its duplicating them again....
    which ones should i shrink???

  25. Nevermind dudes
    i was using 2.2
seems like that version had a bug cause 2.3 assigns the main movie and extras properly...

  26. Hi itspolo

I do not have the Animatrix DVD so I can't be sure, but my guess would be that some of the titles are actually shared by the movie and the extras.
It's DVD Shrink's way of telling you that the amount of compression you use for one will also be used on the other.

I would suggest you go to the unofficial-official DVD Shrink forums.
There has been a few posts about Animatrix there, and you might find your answer amongst them.

EDIT: you were faster than me to reply to your own post.
Glad you found a solution to your problem.

  27. red lion, when I tested CloneDVD I did it from files previously ripped by DVD Decrypter. It worked.

Are you sure you did rip ALL the files, and not just the "movie-only" ones, which is what DVD Decrypter would do by default?

Just did a test with my copy of Total Recall --- ripped all files to disk w/DVD Decrypter and then ran CloneDVD. Painless, took about an hour and a half, and the final product (with all the menues & extras) looks great, easily on a par w/DVD2One or DVD Shrink.

DVDClone by far is the best. DVDShrink is a little too sharpness hence grainy, IC7 is blurry compared to the rest and DVD2ONE is just a tad worse than DVDClone
