I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but when I convert avi files to mpeg with tmpgenc and try to use the soften noise block feature, the feature almost never has any effect. I have only been able to get it to work once on a file with a framerate of 29.97 fps. The files I am currently working with are 23.976 fps. Does the framerate affect whether or not the soften noise block function has any effect? I don't know what I'm doing wrong, could someone give me some advice?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. well, I have to say that I am disappointed with Tmpeg because of this. I get block noise all the damn time. I have tried every different setting and template anyone has suggested. I have recently switched encoders to Panasonic's MPG encoder and since have not experienced ANY block noise at all. all oif my movies play flawlessly. It's a bit slower that Tmpeg but it is much better.

The problem is that I'm using a source file that doesn't have a high enough bitrate, so I'd like to try to get rid of the blocks that are present in the source file, but when I encode to mpeg. Anybody know why the soften noise block feature has no effect for me?

  5. Hmm, i use an older version of tmpg and the block noise does work. although i never have much block noise to begin with. Of course i never set it too high (its default 35-40 for both).
and to the other poster who mentioned that he recieved no noise with the Panasonic, i find that amusing, because in my case it has been the opposite.
depending on what you use to capture and at what rate befroe encoding, this may help reduce your block noise to begin with. Maybe you are not capturing at a high enough rate and you have so much noise for the lowrate capture that the noise block appears to be not helping at all?

I'm using a divx avi (I know, pretty low quality sometimes) which has the noise blocks in the source file. I tried converting one file that was the same way, and it seemed to work. Maybe you're right, the source file may just have too many bitrate shortages to begin with. I figured the soften noise block in tmpgenc was a way to fix that to a certain extent, but maybe I'm wrong. Thanks for your response, anyway.
