I just realized this was already discussed, sorry, was on vacation and just now saw this in an apple.com email! got so excited I posted here!

Man look at the specs on the high end!!!!!

    Dual 2GHz
    1GHz frontside bus
    512K L2 cache/processor
    512MB DDR400 128-bit SDRAM
    Expandable to 8GB SDRAM
    160GB Serial ATA
    SuperDrive
    Three PCI-X Slots
    ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
    64MB DDR video memory

    56K internal modem

Not so wild about the case design, looks like a cheese slicer with all the little holes.

    but WOW!

Consider mine ordered. I'm gonna have to replace my venerable G4/466 with the dual 2 GHz G5. Sorry to lose the ability to boot into OS9 for certain utils (namely DVD Extractor, which is still necessary at times to split certain DVDs across 2 DVD-R - Something I do much less since DVD2OneX came out), but the performance is worth it. I'm glad I waited so long. It's nice to finally be transported to 21st century tech, took 'em long enough... BTW, the holes are for ventilation, what with their crazy cooling system. My only gripe is with the single 5.25" drive bay, but oh well, external FW enclosures have become quite cheap.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

I went to the Apple Store site and priced the new G5 with all the best specs. It turned a $3,500 computer into a $9,700 computer.

  6. I think since this is a new sort of technology for home comptuters, they had to go with more simple design for the cooling, but may come out with a more flashy looking model in the future, just like how they changed the design of the G4.

I would agree with this, after all the complaints about noise from the G4 MDD and FW800 models, I can only imagine Apple is doing their best to keep these machines silent!

Im more bumed that there are not two optical drive bays, I love the ability to copy directly from one disk to the other.

However you look at it, these machines are very impressive
the frontside bus speed alone is something to rejoice about!

I wonder if I could 1,999 or even 2,999 out of my entire current setup if I sold it all

I find it amusing that people are surprised by how much the new memory costs, when just a few years ago memory prices were MUCH higher.

I recently read a message, on the Macintouch site, where someone was suprised to find that when ordering a new dual 2-gig machine with 8-gig of ram - that the memory alone would cost ~$3,800.00.

Are people really surprised when they are ordering 8-times the amount of memory most people would ever think of installing before now? ('')

We're not talking about adding four (dime-a-dozen) 256-meg PC133 dimms to get 1-gig, we're talking about adding EIGHT 1-Gig DDR3200 dimms! Have most people ever had any reason to price 1-gig dimms in PC100, PC133, or DDR2700? - Let alone DDR3200? And now people are (non-chalantly?) considering buying 8 of them at once?? ('')

    Apple is changing the world.

    Mikie

P.S. Thanks for the editing feature on these posts - I need to proofread better the first time!
