I would like to make small clips of certain scenes from dvd's I play on my laptop.
What would be the best way to go about this? I don't have a capture card unfortunately.
Any help would be much appreciated....

You could try DVDdecrypter in "IFO" mode.
Select Stream mode.
Then you can select the chapter you want to copy to your HDD.
If you want to trim it down more, just open in VDub-Mod and use the in and out slider to get the clip you want. Save as an AVI or frameserve to TEMPGenc and create an mpg.Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........ -
