  1. I need some tips for capturing this episode tomorrow at a very good quality.
I will be using my ATI All In Wonder 128 card (tuner) with MMC 7.7.

    I have been capturing my VHS-C home movies at MPEG2, 480 x 480,
48 KHz 16bit ST, Deinterlace, IPB frame, 5000kb and 75%,
but this will be my first TV show saved to SVCD.

Or should I capture higher (overkill)? Then edit and encode down to MPEG2, 480 x 480, 48 KHz and 2500kb down to fit on 700mb SVCD?

    EPISODE SYNOPSIS:
When Borg drones are discovered in the Arctic Circle, Capt. Archer and his crew are called upon to investigate these cybernetic aliens.

Do you have the option of capturing in avi, then encoding to mpg? I've been capturing the last 10 or so episodes of Enterprise at 640x480 avi, then downsizing them to either 480x480 or 352x480 when I encode them to mpg, and they look great. I don't have an ATI card, I have a Pinnacle, but it should be pretty much the same...

Borg drones .. kinda way off the time line of when borgs were first noticed/ seen by refugees first , then the federation etc ..

more like - lets try to get the ratings up and throw some borgs in there

why capture deinterlaced - just curious , do you watch it as de-interlaced or on a tv ? i see so much ref. to deinterlacing everything then wondering why things look jerky ..

  4. What I like to do is set MMC to to VBR 2600000 there a reg tool on this site that will help you set the bitrate just right in the tool's link go to capture's then download ATI AIW MM. C 7.5/7.6 Reg Tool and ATI AIW MMC Reg Tool. So set MMC to SVCD and just use that tool to set VVBR to 2600000. One more thing go to setup then set suston and look for the SUPER-VCD setting then use the tool I just told you about to set the VBR to> One last thing you have to make your own custom setting first SVCD is 480*480 audio is 41000. I use the Dazzle 2 it's alot better then ATI. the card i have is Dazzle 2 pci card there a website you can go to www.dazzlegeek.com also PVr-250 and PVR-350 are good there a timer you can download for Dazzle 2.ATI is software PVR and dazzle are hardware rendering

Of course, you're forgetting first contact... A couple crashlanded borgs in the arctic never hurt anybody

    Can't argue with you there...

Ah, BJ_M, that's the interesting part about bringing The Borg into Enterprise. When Enterprise came out, they said we may be watching a timeline established by the events in First Contact. So this would fit in with that, and hopefully make for an interesting story. But you're most likely correct, it's more of a ploy to raise ratings

Rond66: are you creating an XSVCD? With the audio at 48 khz? If your player will play it, try increasing the max bitrate when you do the final encode to mpg - I use 1000 min, 2350 norm, and 3300 max, and it looks just like (if not better than) watching it on TV. Also, remember that Enterprise is filmed in 24fps. I've found that deinterlacing it doesn't really help the picture, only those few frames that are added when it's broadcast to telesinc it. Again, if your player will support 24fps, try IVTCing it after you capture. I've found that with Enterprise you get the clearest picture if you IVTC it, then use 3:2 pulldown in TMPGEnc.

  7. Not really any help here but regarding the episode, it actually does make sense if you read the full sneak peak for it, ever since they made the First Contact movie the history of star trek has changed, these borg where part of the ship that got destroyed over earth in the film and got frozen in the ice, so makes sense.

    hi everyone.

    @ BJ_M.. wrote:
    >>guess it would have helped had i watched any newer star trek movie --

    YES !! hehe..

See now.. if you was a REAL fan, you'd know this :P .. ..

Did you watch Voyager at all ?? ?? ??
They did a Two-Parter on the BORG and how they became of
    "We will assemilate you"..
"Your biological.. will be added unto ours.." yada, yada, yada..

They went into GREAT detail about their existance or reference w/ Earth, thanks in
part to First Contact. Member.. in the Movie, when they were chasing after the BORG
sphere, and how it went into Earth, and because the Enterprise was in close
proximety, there ended up in the same (or near) time-line as the BORG (give or take
    a few actual events)

7 of 9 had a part in this (Voyager) because it was her Parents that discovered the
BORG myth, that they were chasing when they were searching out for this
cyber BORG myth. I don't think they (7 of 9's) Parents made any reference to
First Contact, cause in their time-line, the Enterprise (captain Archer) era had past.
So, the story-line might try and LINK up w/ (7 of 9's) Parents to collaborate w/ their story.

    StarDate: 05.07.03 - - BORG Time-Line:

    * In Catain Kirks days.. no BORG existed

    * then came Next Generation, again no BORGs

*** ..till Q came into the picture and hurled them into outer Delta Quardrant
........where they met up w/ the BORG.. also remember
........how little, the board looked THEN (w/ out as many cyber connects gadgets..
........then, sometime later, Movie "First Contact", and you NOW have the
........BORG going back into time (Earth) and Enterprise right behind them..

    * DS9 comes into play, but NO BORG around

    * Then, you have Voyager.., here is where they brought the BORG
...into the story w/ great detail. (thanks to Q in TNG) and (7 of 9's) Parents

    * Now, you have Enterprise (Captain Archer) days (or era) and this will be
...the missing gap that explains the BORG's presents
...on Earth, and quite possibly how they were around in our Sector or system ect.
note, I believe their is a Contradiction to this story-line, because on Voyager,
when (7 of 9's) parent's discuss the possible myth of BORG, they
were not assemilating Earth (at any time prior to Voyager, and all through Kirks days
and Archers days) Remember hwo they were following the BORG and studying
them.. they shouldn't of even ben their, cause they should have ben Assemilated
long ago, which would make Voyager never to have exhisted in the first place
So, it'll be interesting to see how to shoot this story-line or possibly re-write
    some of it.

If I've made any errors above, please feel free to correct this time-line.

I for one, can't wait for this showing, and will DEFFINATELY be TIVO'ing this
(well, w/ MY method of TIVO'ing) and Capturing this show.

"we will begin our assimilating techniques.. hehe.."

The writers of Star Trek are probably going to approach the issue as; the Borg are revived, they assimilate a few people and/or a ship trying to get back to the Delta quadrant, meanwhile Starfleet classifies the events in the name of worldwide security. That's partly why the Borg aren't mentioned in TOS, aside from the fact that we are operating in a different timeline (and besides the fact that the Borg hadn't even been thought of in the 60's). It will be very interesting to see how they do it, and which direction they take the Trek "history" in. This may be why 7 of 9's parents were investigating the Borg "myth" - by their time, it's been classified for so long that if it has been leaked to the public in any way, it's probably considered no more than a myth. I'm very surprised they didn't make this one a two-part episode and a season ending cliffhanger.

    @ jld10t,

    >> t that we are operating in a different timeline (and besides the fact that
    >>he Borg hadn't even been thought of in the 60's

Based on memory.. In First Contact, when the BORG time-traveled back, in
time, they didn't go WAY back say to 1960's. Else why would they have gone
to the 21st centery. So, the 60's is mute here.

If I understood then, as First Contacts' story-line followed.. during the
the chase scene, the BORG sphere was already ahead of them, firther in time.
So, as the Enterprise (TNG) was getting nearer toward Earth, there sensors
were already picking up the BORG's present (hence, take over and simulations)
during their chase. Because the BORG was ahead, (time-line wise) they had
already assemilated the Humans (Earth) But, also, because the Enterprise (TNG)
ship was caught in the BORG's Sphere's wake or time-warp, they were NOT
    subjected to the assemilation.

So, when the Enterprise finally DID reach Earth, the Humans were not assemilated.

But, much of the story-line has escapted me, so I may have gotten some of
the parts mixed and de-semilated hehe..

    >> I'm very surprised they didn't make this one a two-part episode and a
    >> season ending cliffhanger.

Actually, if memory serves me correctly, it was a "cliffhanger"

What I meant by "they hadn't thought of them in the 60's" was they hadn't come up with the idea of the Borg when TOS came out, and that's why they weren't mentioned in TOS, not that the Borg had traveled back to the 1960's. Is this episode, "Regeneration" a cliffhanger? I didn't think so, because on startrek.com they list more episodes for the rest of this season. When I said that the Borg would assimilate some humans and/or a ship, I meant I think this is what is going to happen in this episode, "Regeneration", not what has happened, or will happen in the history of the Borg, and only a few (maybe a dozen) people will be assimilated in this episode, not the entire planet. I don't think 3 or 4 Borg could assimilate Earth, and they're not going to have that happen in a 1 hour episode of Enterprise. That's all I meant Sorry if there was any confusion to my last post.

I'm getting all ready I think I'm going to go ahead and capture at 720x480 for mine - If it's not that good of an episode I can downsize it to SVCD, but if it is really good, then I'll go for DVD
Good luck to everyone else recording, or capturing Let's hope this episode is worth it

    Me too hehe..

Well, I got it on DV tape, and I'll prabably do an actual capture on Sunday,
when they repeart it again.. just in case.

Ok, the short.. this was a IMO, a well thought out story line. I now have
a better understanding of the BORG presence, and I may have ben a little
incorrect in my comments above, in prev. post.

Maybe the BORG's first attempt failed, because they did not expect to
encounter ARKTIC cold 'frr-frzz-szzzaa-szaa-szzza' and resulted in a crash
and hybernations (not that they were hybernating) ??

But, thanks to our medeling, we disrupted the time line once again, and
cause a few events (perhaps a new one, or not) by comming into contact
(how ironic) and setting up events that some how, lead to the 24th's comming
attractions w/ the BORG ..even though it was suppose to have happended
when they first attempted to land 100 years prior to Captain Archer's era.
Looks like some time during or shortly before Zephrans Contrans era.

Did you all catch the Admeral's facial look, when he was told that the researchers
had not ben heard of in three days ?? Looks like he knows' something..

In any case, it looks like I gotta re-watch First Contact to get the story line
straight !! I only watched it once, back when I rented it a few years ago But,
it'll be fun ta watch again.

Sorry if I'm off a few facts but you gotta admit, it WAS a good episode in
any case !! Also.. TV guide says it's suppose to get even better, and to look for
May 21st Cliffhanger ..more dangleing hehe.. .. ..

    Oh, yeah.. Ti ol's hot..

Yet another post about the Borg in Star Trek...

Remember the TOS episode "The Doomsday Machine"? The one with the gigantic planet-killer machine? Used a pure anti-proton beam to chop planets into rubble, then ingested them for fuel?

Remember how the Borg were established in TNG? "The Neutral Zone," and later "Q Who?" That the Borg literally scooped cities and technology off the surface of the planet?

Can we not put two and two together, and come to the conclusion that the doomsday machine was constructed by an alien race to fight the Borg? That this race might have figured that since the Borg left devastated planets in their wake, the planet killer could use them to fuel itself... in effect, allowing the Borg to actually provide the means for their own destruction?

    Intriguing thought, yes?

(Can't say I came up with this idea, sadly. Peter David put the pieces together for his TNG Borg novel, "Vendetta." I just stole, er, plagarized it for myself. )

Why bother capping it yourself? Cap groups like SD-6 do a far better cap job for SVCD than anything I can produce and have been doing so consistently for quite some time. You can get their caps from their own group on Usenet at whatever your ISPs max DL speed is, so you don't have to put up with P2P slow down or other limitations. I do make back-ups to VHS for friends lacking the proper DVD players but that's all...

You could always ask them how to cap and produce really fine stuff from off-air sources, which is why I've gone back to capping AVI instead of Mpeg-2. That took some time to do as Win XP had problems producing the sound correctly. But then again, the "teachers" I have are the people posting these caps in the first place. I can feel for you on wanting to do things yourself. Since my Mpeg-2 caps using the ATI are only marginal at best, I decided that if I'm going to cap for posting to the net, I should get the best advice possible. The people who head up these groups are really helpful and know what they are doing and are very dedicated. Give 'em a try...

Hi, I'm kinda new to all of this.

I would like to begin capturing Enterprise episodes off DishNetwork myself.

I have a Canopus ADVC1394 capture device. Currently, I capture with Vegas Video.

I usually put episodes on VCD, but might make the switch to SVCD.

What are good settings and resolutions to capture at? After capture, should I process with TMPGenc and/or VirtualDub?

I use Nero to burn my discs with, but know that sometimes Nero messes up the audio. So should I save separate audio with VirtualDub, process with TMPGenc and then burn with Nero?

All this gets confusing, any help would be appreciated.
