  1. For some reason, Vista enterprise edition has some problems playing avi/mpg on the WMP 11. It says it cannot find the coding. I had no problem with XP version running WMP 11 (same music files). I tried doing a search but didnt find anything on this topic. What's the deal on this?

Have you installed the codecs? Like divx, xvid or mpeg2 codecs. I use ffdshow(it supports most video and audio codecs) in Vista and it works fine.

  3. Vista Enterprise is essentially Vista Business with a handful of extra features. Both lack some multimedia features such as Media Center. HD MovieMaker and DVD Authoring. This *may* mean that some codecs available out-of-the-box with Home Premium and Ultimate are not present.

In addition to Baldrick's recommendation, VLC may work for you, too.

  5. What audio & video codecs are being used by your videos? (use gspot or mediainfo to determine this)

It might be as simple as an ac3filter

  6. Which version of Enterprise - 32-bit or 64-bit?

Also, if VLC won't play them then try turning off Aero to see if that helps. (VLC uses its own "private" decoders)

  7. yep ac3filter,
the ones that have problems are divx videos, even though divx is installed. i think divx has a problem with vista and wmp 11 combination or something.

  8. Try enabling DivX in the ffdshow video decoder configuration

  9. its enabled. cuz when i try the file on my xp with wmp11 desktop it works, just when i try the file on the vista with wmp11 laptop, it shows error readaing it.

good question, - how do i check 32 or 64 bit?

  10. Click on the Start menu
    Right-click on Computer
    Select Properties in the menu

Under System you'll see System type - e.g., 32-bit Operating System

  11. 32 bit, i thought 64 is only AMD right now?
Anyways, what does that matter? All I know is, the same exact divx music files (avi) plays on my desktop (XP professional on WMP 11), but the same file does NOT have codec on Vista Enterprise on WMP 11) All the same codecs (divx, ffdshow, etc) installed on both units too.....So weird....

  12. It matters because the 64-bit version has both 32- and 64-bit versions of WMP. 64-bit WMP can only use 64-bit codecs. But, since you have 32-bit, it's a moot point.

Have you registered the codecs on Vista? Sometimes things like codecs don't register properly during the installation process.

In Computer, go to the folder above the one where the DivX codec is installed. While pressing the shift button, right click on that folder (the one with DivX) and select Open Command Window Here. You'll see a command window open and you will be in the folder containing the DivX codec. If the name of the codec if fred.dll, type:

    regsvr32 fred.dll

    If regsvr32 isn't recognized, type:

    %systemroot%\system32\regsvr32 fred.dll
