  1. I want to produce a compliant SVCD and get the best audio I can.

If the source DVD has DD 5.1 and DD 2.0, should I use the DD 2.0 to produce the stereo MPEG1 file? Since it was most likely mastered in a studio to give the best surround separation as possible over stereo. And it will not be drastically different (in bitrate) from the original.

Or should I use the 5.1 and assume that my audio encoding software can create a better construction due to the higher detail to start with?

Will downsampling from 48 to 44.1 create a noticeable effect on the surround detail in either case?

I already know what software can do this. However, I would like to hear peoples experience and opinion on the surround quality they are obtaining.

  2. It just occurred to me! If a DTS soundtrack exist then the theory about re-encoding MPEG1 from a higher bitrate source should apply. Now the next question is what audio encoders can decode DTS?
