Hey all
Im using DVD Shrink to make rip my DVD's to a single Vob (only the movie content) with only one english audio chosen which is 5.1 surround sound. Now after thats done, I go to Dr Divx (version 1.0.6) and hit video file, and choose the vob I ripped in shrink. I made my own profile which I use for my Archos av300 which is 1000kbps, 1pass encode, frame rate 1x, bidirectional encoding off, 304 X 224, bicubic sharp, Progressive out, Encode performence slow, H.263, boost audio, 44.10 128kpbs stereo cbr.
Now the problem is this, the audio and video are out of sync. What am I doing wrong, there must be something incorrect. Im trying to backup chicken little so I can put it on my Archos av300.
Ps. The audio is ahead of the video.
Your help is appreciated greatly.

There may be a audio offset that the program missed. I use VirtualDub Mod to read the VOBS and encode the selected audio over to MP3. You can also adjust the audio offset with it. I normally encode to Xvid or the H codec for backing up my DVDs to my laptop, but I do have Divx 6 in my system. You can also try the Aud-X codec if you want to keep the surround sound. Never had much luck with DrDivx.
BTW, do you mean DVDDecrypter instead of Shrink? That's what I use. -
It really makes no sense to me. I tried it with the incredibles, and it didnt give me any problems, but chicken little persists on giving me a un synced movie.
-
Chicken Little is a Disney title. It has RipGuard protection that leaves unreferenced cells after decrypting that causes your asynch audio. One way to beat it is to follow the instructions in this post:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=803109#post803109
Instead of processing it in VobBlanker, you can also use FixVTS. I also understand that the very latest version of DVDFab Decrypter both decrypts and removes the unreferenced cells in one go. Maybe someone else can confirm that. -
ok so should i run the dvd through dvdfab decrypter and then through fixvts. Would this solve the sync problems with dr divx???
-
I don't know which version of DVDFab Decrypter you used, and I consider Dr. DivX a piece of junk. But that's OK. Rather than waste so much time doing it over and over again, why not just fix the asynch audio by setting the proper delay and resaving it. Once you figure the right delay to set, it takes less than a minute to resave it. It's what, about a second off?
Also I was contradicting the post to which I linked, because he said to use DVDDecrypter, rather than DVDFab Decrypter. That guy, setarip_old, knows his stuff, and maybe I shouldn't have mentioned DVDFab Decrypter, although I know a lot of people use it successfully. -
Yes, I'd try it that way, i.e. DVDDecrypter -> FixVTS. You could also use the PSL2 Wizard in PgcEdit to accomplish the same thing, (although Ripguard discs don't require a PSL2 file). The latest version of VobBlanker should work also, earlier versions had difficulty with Ripguard. The Narnia disc, for example, has the latest Ripguard, and all the above backup strategies work on it.
Really, if you do the backup as above and the problem persists, I'd suspect Dr DivX as being at fault. Verify the backup as properly synced before attempting conversion to DivX.
But, as suggested, you could correct the audio offset.
Good luck.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Ok, Im doing it the way the you guys told me, I ran it through DVDDecrypter. Then I ran it through VobBlanker. Everything went ok, I checked it and played it, and it seemed to be in sync. Now when I ran it through dr divx, it got all out of sync. This cant be right. Everything ran ok with all the other dvds I threw at it.
Ps its about a second off.
I ran it through shrink again, and made into one single vob. Then I ran that through dr divx, and it gave me the same deal.
What are the settings I should be doing in vobblanker? Can someone tell me how to use it? Ive never come across this sort of problem so you'll have to forgive me for my ignorance. -
Using VobBlanker, it's supposed to work by opening the DVD, giving it a destination, and then just hitting "Process".
Since you aren't willing to use something other than Dr. DivX, why don't you try this:
Open the out-of-synch AVI in VDubMod (NOT VDub, as I think the audio is VBR MP3), hitting "No" if it gives you a message. Set Video for Direct Stream Copy. Go Streams->Stream List->right-click the audio->Interleaving->Audio Skew Correction. Now, if it's about a second off, then set it for 1000 ms if the audio plays before the lips move, and -1000 if the lips move before you hear the words. Understand? You're adjusting the delay, the time when the audio plays in relation to the video. OK your way out of there and go File->Save As AVI, give it a new name, and wait. It'll go faster if you can save to a second hard drive, but either way it won't take long. If it's still a bit out-of-synch when done, go back to the same place and adjust the audio skew correction and try again. -
To be honest, Im willing to use something else. Dr divx doesnt seem to be working that great anyway. Are their other free programs out their that might work better than the dr. I heard virtualdubmod works real well converting vobs to avi format. What do you think?
Thanks you for your post manono youve been helping me throughout the process. -
Thanks you for your post manono youve been helping me throughout the process.
You're welcome, but so far we haven't solved your problem. So I don't feel so good about it. I would recommend AutoGK. It's free, produces good output and is well known, so there are lots of guides, not that you'll really need one. Except for one thing. I don't have or have never seen an Archos. Is it true that it has a 480x272 screen? And is it true that videos not in that AR will be stretched to fill the screen?. So, if you have a 4:3 video at 360x272, that it'll be made to fill the screen, giving you bad Aspect ratio? If so, then maybe AutoGK, an otherwise very good program, might not be what you want.
I understand that StaxRip has some sort of a PMP template for the Archos, and creates nice videos in the correct size. I've never used it, but have only read this. If true, I think I'd recommend it for you. It does require that .Net framework, though.
Also, my friend jonny has created a PSP encoder called PSPEnc, which outputs for the same resolution (?).
Good luck. -
I think I may have to try that. I think I have used AutoGK before if Im not mistaken, and yes it does output and fills the entire screen. The maximum resolution it can handle it 640 x 480 I think, but thats not a problem. I only want the resolution to fit the screen of the archos which is 320 x 240. Which is the same as an ipod video screen. Well let me give you a run down on what I did yesterday.
Last night I encoded a vob to an avi with Virtualdub-MPEG2 and it gave me a good video when I played on my lappy. But when I played it on the archos. The video was slow, and their was no audio. Now for the audio issue; I think it has to do with it not converting the origanl ac3 2ch audio to an mp3 or wav format, because I havent downloaded any codec for that. Ive only downloaded the divx pro 5.2.1 codec which I use for the video compression. Now what would I need to compress the audio? And why was the video so slow? -
Oh, so it's 320x240? And widescreen movies probably have to have black bars added above and below, or else they get stretched to fill the screen, giving bad Aspect Ratio? Either that or you'd have to crop off the sides to make them fit the 320x240 screen, I guess. In any event, I think I'd recommend you give StaxRip a try, and see if it has a template for what you want to do. I'm sorry, but I know nothing about those small portable players.
As for the slow-play problem you had, I'm not sure. Does the Archos require a 29.97fps framerate? And it doesn't like 23.976fps maybe? Did you make it to 320x240? There must be some Archos experts around here.
The audio is easy. Install either HeadAC3he (easy to use) or BeSweet with one of the GUIs (can do more things, is more complex, but has some good presets). Then convert that AC3 to MP3 and mux it into the video. I suppose there's a chance (but not a good one) that the slowdown was caused by the player trying to decode audio it's not equipped to decode. -
Yes, you're right. However, bitrate correlates directly with filesize. If you know the size you want, you'll be able to figure the bitrate from any bitrate calculator. It is going to give you 48KHz audio only. If you want or need 44.1KHz, you'll have to do it outside of AutoGK. As for not being able to name the height, but only the width, if you name 320 width, it'll automatically give you the height with proper aspect ratio. If it's a 1.33:1 movie, it should turn out to be 320x240. If it's a 1.85:1 movie, you'll get 320x176. And if it's a 2.35:1 movie, you'll probably get 320x144. I don't know if those resolutions are any good to you or not, but that's what it will give you. I don't know if your player adds black bars to maintain aspect ratio, or just stretches everything to fill the screen. If it stretches, then you don't want to use AutoGK for the job. It wasn't really designed for that, but at least partly for making AVIs for playback on standalone DVD/MPEG-4 players.
It handles up to 30fps? So it can play back 23.976fps OK? -
Yes, it actually does handle quite well, any frame rate you throw at it. As for autogk, it doesnt seem to be working well with my device. I encoded the video, and when I played it back on the archos, the video was slow, then it went like it fast forwareded a little. Strange??
But I think I found a solution for this problem, PocketDivXEncoder_0.3.60, it seems to be working above all the other mentioned programs. It gives me audio options, and video quality settings. And it seems to be specifically made for portable devices like my archos.
I will continue my encode, and see the results. -
Well, sorry it took long for me to post. I encoded one of my vob's and it did a superb job, no complaints for a free programs like this one.
Now, I tried Chicken Little, and to my surprise it worked. The audio is synced correctly. When I put the video in my archos, the video played, but looked kind of smeared, and it did played synced though. I think its because I didnt run it through dvddecrypter and vobblanker, it must be because of those uregistered cells you spoke about. I'll go give it another go, and I'll post my results.
Later -
Well, sadly it keeps giving me the same problem. The video keeps giving me a smeared effect. Although my sister did get a program for her ipod video called PQdvdtoipod. Now I think it does support vob conversion.
-
So you are getting synched up audio? That's good. So maybe the earlier problems can be attributed to Dr. Divx. As for smeared video, I don't know that program, and don't know what the problem could be. However, since encoding for portable devices is all the rage these days, there must be a forum or 2 for this thing somewhere where people discuss this kind of problem. I did find this in the FAQ on the site:
4 - When playing a file on my PC, there are some artifacts on the video...
> You need to play your movies with another software player : this problem can happen when rendering non-DivX (e.g. XviD or FFMPEG) movies with the DivX codec. Try using a player like MPlayer or VideoLanClient.
So, it could be a playback issue. Does the Archos use the TCPMP player, as they suggest? -
Yes I think the problem was Dr. Divx. The smeared video has me stumped. The Achos itself has a built in video player, which video player I have no idea. I decided to try out ImTOO DVD to MP4 converter. It seems to support Archos devices as well. LOL Ive never tried so many programs in my life as Ive done these past day.
Thanks you for that find manono. I'll post back some info. -
ImTOO DVD to MP4 is giving me syncing problems, aswell as video lag.
Im thinking of trying virtualdub mpeg2 again. Its what people with archos devices usually use. I just tried it, and it gave me a great video, but not synced at all. I did download AC3ACM so virtualdub mpeg2 can read the audio because the audio is AC3 5.1 surround sound on the vob file. But I was wondering, the audio my archos can handle is only MP3 and WAV so wouldnt that cause a problem...??? -
Hi-
So, back to the tried and true methods, eh?
I wouldn't let VDubMPEG-2 do the audio. I much prefer a dedicated audio encoder, to do it separately, and then mux it in afterwards. Maybe that's just me. I don't know, but I've done it that way for thousands of AVI. As far as I'm concerned, the easiest-to-use quality audio encoder is HeadAC3he. Once you get it set up correctly, open the AC3, choose a Destination format (MP3, I guess), hit Options twice and either choose one of the presets or choose some min and max bitrates. BeSweet is quite good, if a bit more complex, but does have a good MP3 Default Profile and a bunch of Presets that are easy to click on. In any event, you'd mux the audio with the video when done, and if you find that it isn't in synch, adjust the delay (audio skew correction) so that it gets in synch.
Also, if one of these portable player encoders is otherwise good, except for the audio being out-of-synch, and if it's making AVI, it's a fairly simple matter to get the audio back in synch. Let me see if I can find the instructions I've written out before..
Open the AVI in Media Player Classic. Right-Click the screen and go Options->Audio Switcher->check Audio Time Shift. Estimate the delay in .ms (1000 .ms=1 second) and if the sound plays before or after the lips move, or the door slams, or the gun fires (sharp sounds are easier to figure on). If you hear the gunshot after the gun fires, then you want to apply a negative delay. If you hear the sound of the gun before the gun fires, then you apply a positive delay. Set that, OK it and resume playback. Adjust until you get it right. MPC makes real time adjustments. Once you have it, write down that delay (with positive or negative), uncheck that box and close MPC. Open the AVI in VDubMod (NOT VDub, if the MP3 is VBR and not CBR), hitting "No" if it asks you a question. Set Video for Direct Stream Copy. Go Streams->Streams List->Right-Click the audio stream, go to Interleaving, leave the Preset and Interleave alone, and apply your delay from MPC in the Audio Skew Correction box. OK your way out of there, go File->Save As, give it a new name, save and test. -
WOW, so much info I knew nothing of. Well its 3:30am in the morning and Im a bit tired so I'll have to give that a try in the morning.
Hey manono, dude you are awesome. Nobody has been as patient as you have been so far. Thanks alot buddy. Anytime you need some help, if that evey happens shoot me an email.
Until then later. -
You're welcome. But since I didn't do a whole lot to solve your problems, I decided to beat you to death with words instead.
Good Luck.
-
Hey I just did a different dvd and its giving slow video, but it seems to be synced. Could it be the codec Im using. Or could it be specific setting Im missing.
-
Hi-
I don't know which program you're using any more, or what settings you're using. Try a different software player to see if it still plays slow. It's an AVI, right? Open it in VDub(Mod) or GSpot and check the framerate to see if it's correct. Check the length to see if the movie somehow got longer. If it's much longer now, then that accounts for the slow playing, and something went dreadfully wrong during the encoding, most likely some setting you used.
