Hi, I would like to know if it make sense to convert avi to vob in the first step (allowing me to adjust various conversion parameters) and then vob to dvd in the second step. Or is it better to make direct conversion avi to dvd in terms of quality?

A vob file is a part of a dvd. Just use a GOOD free all-in-one converters like avstodvd and you can adjust conversion parameters and you will get a complete dvd.
Avoid crap from xilisoft.
