How/why is it possible that an AVI which plays perfectly on my pc, has audio out-of-sync (by about a second, from the very begining) when played on a Philips DVP-642 dvd player? I realize that this form is not for software video player questions, but there's no forum for both software and hardware playing of files. The DVP-642 plays AVI files (and dvix, xvid, mpeg4, etc.). In both cases, I am playing from the same disc. That is, I'm not playing from the hard drive on the pc, but from disc on the 642, so the file is the same.

How can it be out sync on one place and not the other?

  2. This is the right forum. It's true that sometimes files play out of synch which is probably due to the limitations of the ESS chipset inside the DVP642.

It's possible that your file uses variable bitrate (VBR) and that is causing the problems. Or perhaps the video dimensions are too large. It could be a number of things causing the problems.

When I make a file, I use xvid with a maximum of 640 width and Constant Bitrate (CBR).

If I get a file someone else made, I usually convert the audio to CBR if it was originally variable bitrate. I almost always do this with bigger files +700Mb, although VBR seems to play okay on the relatively smaller files (<200Mb).

Why don't you open the file with GSpot, and give us the following: Video bitrate, Audio bitrate, if VBR or CBR, Video dimensions.

PS video software players are things like Windows Media Player, PowerDVD, media player classic, etc., that play video files on your computer.
