Hi I've got an unusual proplem that is very irritating. I have Windows 7 and a brand new ASUS DVD drive (because I thought the previous one was broken) and when I burn an avi movie file to a DVD it won't even show up on the DVD player but when I burn the EXACT same file to the EXACT same DVD using my gf's computer (VISTA laptop) it shows up and plays fine even though they are exactly the same and burned at exactly the same speed (8x).
I am so confused. I'm pretty sure I've burned DVDs and played them on my parents DVD player using this OS (Win 7) and it worked perfectly fine. Can't test that theory for a few weeks though.
Any Help???![]()
Thanks!!

Welcome to the forums DVDFuzz. Unfortunately like most new members, you incorrectly assume that the less you tell us, the more likely you are to get help. You haven't told us very much that is helpful in your post. Specifically it would be useful to know the following.
1) Put the DVD in YOUR computer. Can you see anything on the disc? Do you see these directories:
VIDEO_TS
AUDIO_TS
If you don't have those directories, what exactly is on this disc?
2) Assuming you attempted to convert the AVI file to DVD format, what software did you use to do this?
3) What program did you use to burn the DVD?
4) What brand and type (ie. DVD+R, DVD-RW, etc.) of DVDs are you using? -
Thank you jman for your warm and friendly welcome.
I'm burning a simple data DVD where you burn an avi file to a SONY DVD+R disc meaning the disc simply contains the 2 files and no DVD audio or video folders. I used Nero on both computers. I did not try to convert the file, it's DIVX and the DVD player can play this as I said.
I did exactly what I said before and nothing more complicated or I would have said so. -

I don't know about hech54's advice. In my experience if a standalone DVD player supports playing Divx/Xvid, it will do so from DVD or CD media. While I suppose that there might be 1 or 2 players out there that require such discs to be on CD media, I've never heard of that.
Standalone DVD players are fussy about what they will play with regards to Divx/Xvid. Take a look at this sticky which lists potential playback problems for Divx/Xvid files.

You should examine your Divx file with something like GSpot to see if it has any of these potential problems. -
In short, computer video players will play a variety of video formats, but the standalone DVD player hooked to your TV set is limited on what it will play. As mentioned, not a whole lot of models will play Divx, and those that do may have strict Divx playback parameters. Consider converting your movie to something that is DVD-compliant.

Hey guys, thank you for your feedback but my problem isn't that my player won't play the DIVX file, it's that it won't play it when burned from my computer but will play it when burned from my girlfriend's laptop. That makes no sense to me. It's happened multiple times with different DIVX avi files and it's always the same thing. It's nothing to do with the DVD player in my opinion, it's something to do with the way my computer is burning the file...
I burn the same file to the same DVD, in the same way from 2 different computers so that I end up with the same movie twice on the same disc and only 1 version (from my girlfriend's laptop) shows up on the DVD player and plays.
It's like my computer is doing something to the movie or disc when it burns... -
OK, finally I understand what is going on. You are doing multi-session burning. The vast majority of DVD players cannot recognize multi-session discs correctly and will see only the first or last session (it varies depending on the make of the player). This is why you only see 1 file.

I don't think he is talking about multi-session either. I think he is talking about same "brand" from the same spindle when he says same DVD.

Jman you could indeed be correct, I will check it out and reply!
Edit:
Just burnt an avi file to a new disc using my computer and it showed up on the player so thank you very much for your help jman!
This player that we have is new but has been sitting in a shed for around 5 years so it's not exactly state of the art... I'm used to my old player which could definitely read multi'session discs as I burnt them all the timeLast edited by DVDFuzz; 16th Sep 2010 at 05:15.

Also, if you're burning .AVI/.divx files to a data disc for a DivX/Xvid-capable DVD player, you might want to use Imgburn to burn the disc, rather than Nero - it'll attempt to detect whether or not you're burning such a disc, and offer to make sure the disc is in the proper data-disc format for that type of player.
