  1. My remote stopped working for my Philips DVP642 dvd player so I bought
a cheap $4 remote from Wal-mart and programmed some codes and the
player worked for some of the buttons but not all. I put every Philips
code in that I could find but only basic buttons like on/off, play,
pause, next/prev chapter worked. FF and rewind didn't work along with
the up/down arrows for the cursor.

Can someone please tell me of a better but inexpensive remote control
for this player and the codes to use that will work all the buttons?

    Thanks,
    Melina

I have found that all these remotes only work the functions you mentioned ( on, off, etc.)
Philips is probably the worst company around in terms of any support.
They sell a universal remote, but I doubt if it does anything more than above.( $11.00)
DVD players have come way down in price and you can get a new one for not much more than what they would charge you for a replacement remote. Toll-free: 1-866-464-1682.
Stick to Sony, Panasonic or Samsung. You can get a new one for less than $50.00

I just went to the site for a replacement remote and the price is $33.00.
Try these steps - maybe it will help:
Step 1- Pull the batteries out of the remote and leave them out until Step 4.
Step 2- Press and release each and every button one at a time on the remote control until every button has been pressed and released at least once!
Step 3- If your remote has slide switches, you must move the switch to each position then repeat the button pushing in Step 2.
(When you're done, be sure to put the slide switch in the correct position to operate the unit the remote came with!)

Step 4- Put the batteries back into the remote, being very careful to install them correctly. New batteries should be used if you're not sure about the old ones.
    Step 5- Try the remote.

my father had that happen on his oddly enuff and I went to a store called Big Lots and bought a remote on closeout called a "Jensen" for 10 bux. Programs any remote and any function. Worked fine for him.

Just buy another Philips dvd player if need be and keep the ole trusty 642 in reserve until u find a reliable universal remote. Get the 3982 at wallie world for $45...plays everything.
