    Hi!

A friend of mine has a digital cam, model JVC gr-d33.

She wants to connect her cam to the computer, but there isn't a firewire port in her computer.

My question is: is there a Firewire-USB cable, so she can do this?

    Thanks!
    Best regards,
    Joelson.

Just buy a PCI card with a firewire port. They are not that expensive. You can't go from a firewire output to a USB input.

  3. If such an animal existed, (it does not), you would not want one. Get the Firewire card.

A firewire card is the best option. But there are other options: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=269248

I just found a cable that will convert a firewire DV stream into an USB2 DV stream

    Take a look: http://www.pixela-1.com/captycable/

A $130US price tag is a little steep, though. I could buy a quite a few PCI Firewire cards for that or even some PCMCIA Firewire cards.

Totally untested and not to be trusted.

Why spend $130 for this when a PCI card and cable can be had for $20 if you shop carefully.

I dont think it would be that cheap for use on a "Laptop". But very good point.

I wouldnt trust that it would work. "That Great".

Yes, they do make a combination USB/Firewire card. They have them at CompUSA.

I do prefer a PCI or cardbus card instead of this cable, but there are some systems out there with no expansion capabilities (like a Dell Optiplex SX270). For those systems a cable like the one in the link above is the only (and expensive) option.

I suppose it would have purposes like ofbarea mentions. It would be nice to be able to download a DV file to just any computer with a USB 2.0 port. Maybe if they sell a few and the price comes down to about $50US, it might find a niche.
