Ive got a JVC HDD evario camera - Not that impressed with it

    1. It's recorded files are a MOD codec (a type of MPEG2 codec. annoying!! but i'm stuck with it).

    2. FFmpeg can play the video in its preview box, but no sound.

    3. I hoped that the sound would come through if i did a transcode to another format...But it does NOT

the details of the MOD clip:
    Video Tracks: 224 MPEG-2, 720 × 576, 4:3, 25 fps, 8.90 Mbps, upper field first

    Audio Tracks:128 AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 384 kbps

Any thoughts or advice, i'd be grateful
    thanks

P.S Not sure if this is relevant but, the files play fine in MPEGstreamclip (sound works also). If my memory serves me well (i got the camera 3 years ago), i'm sure it would only play in mpegstreamclip after i got the MPEG 2 plugin)....But i could be wrong??

A couple of years back a friend had gotten a JVC camera similar to yours. Only difference was his was HiDef, but the files were MPEG2 in the MOD container. The software that came w. the camera worked, but was very unpleasent and not much else would work properly with the files. I found that using SUPER To direct stream copy the files from their MOD container to an MPG container allowed him to work with the files with the app. of his choice. SUPER does not have a very good reputation for any encoding work, but the direct stream copy did not seem to effect quality (unless there is something SUPER has going on behind the curtain while it is opening the file - eg. color space conversion etc.). There are probably other apps. that can do the same.
About the sound issue. Could their be multiple audio streams in the original files?

  3. you might try installing ac3filter, that should install the ac3 codec and allow the audio to play.

  4. What are you trying to do? Just playback or editing?

On a mac, vlc should play it fine even in .mod container, and avidemux should work for editing (you can also re-wrap i.e. stream copy into mpeg-ps aka. .mpeg)

nay, the poster should put mac specific problems in the mac forum, then there wouldn't be any question.

Appologies....I registered an hour ago and this is my very first posting...I want to transcode it from MOD (mpeg2) into mpeg4 in FFMPEG..... The only APP that ive been successful in so far (with this particular problem is MPEGstreamclip). I want to try to do it in FFmpeg,so i can compare the "quality and options" of FFMPEGS MPEG 4 encoding to other APPS (if you see what i mean). Thanks for ac3filter suggestion (listed above), but couldnt find a mac version...I want to try and do it all within FFmpeg if i can (want to avoid multiple encoding)....I have uploaded one of my MOD files in question to
https://www.yousendit.com/download/Y1RxNU1CZEt0QTBLSkE9PQ ....available for 7 days only(6 second clip=size=5.7 MB...if you want to see if you can get sound in ffmpeg then i'd be thankful

I'm just realising tht you may all be on pc...I'll give it a couple of hours to get a solution and then i'll repost in the MAC section

  8. Avidemux definitely works on your clip, and is cross platform

Be aware some ffmpeg revisions have known issues with AC3 audio, you have to find a build that works or compile it yourself. For example r16956 works on your sample. Most of the autobuilds should work http://ffmpeg.arrozcru.org/autobuilds/

Please don't repost in the MAC section, a Mod will move this thread
