SmileyPic - my new image managing tool

ok ok before you start, you will think I'm spamming but I've asked so there :P. Been a while since I posted but life's been brutal to me the last year so I've cut down forum time dramatically

anyway I've been very slowly co-developing a program for nearly 2 years now and I'm letting it loose for people to try out and test. I think someone used a similar tool at the Pub forum (can't recall who) but I thought it was great being able to select just the right smiley rather than the usual 5 or so most people use. Since then I thought I could make a better version and I think I have . I'm sure some people here enjoy using smileys and hopefully this will give you more choice. It's also going to be used for pictures to save you messing around trying to upload and then link to pics on other websites but that's in future versions

you need to unzip the beta002.zip files to a folder somewhere and remember where. You also unzip the smileypic.zip file and simply install the program. It will probably tell you whether you need the .Net files or not. If you need the .Net files then you can get them at the Download Page Linkski

Once you start the program click Project and then Open and browse the folder where you unzipped the beta0011ff.zip too and select the project.smiley file

you can resize the windows and collapse the 2 outer windows so you only see smilies.

that's it as now you will see the packages in the left window with a few 100 smilies in and you can select any smiley you want. You have to drag them from the program window (it disappears when you click and hold a smiley) and drop them into the reply box and that's it, it automatically creates the code to show the image in your post. You can also put them into emails but you must change it to Image and just drag and drop smileys into Outlook Express, Incredimail etc

One thing you must do if you use smileys from the Main package is change the settings (top middle option) to HTML as it won't work with forum code as each forum is normally different

it's got a few features and has a search option and you can show the smiley names and so on but these are basic instructions for now. For now I've also knocked up a quick guide page so that it's simpler to use and understand the program a little better than nothing at all

Believe it or not I actually thought about doing such a project. My idea was slightly different though and was going to be a local HTML page. The smilies would be inserted via JS, just like you have here. Never really fully investigated though, might not be possible because I'm pretty sure you would need the JS to be specifically for that page... JS is not my cup of tea though. Maybe you can run with it.

I originally started with the HTML page 2 years ago but then it gave limited options so it was switched. Like you said with it being local then you don't have to download the smileys every time . Just for example the smileys here at VH are 1MB so every time someone clicks the View more Emoticons just to look for a smiley it loads 250 or so extra smileys!. Within a minute or so I can create a VH package so that you can quickly browse to that package, select the smiley and drag n drop it into the text field. Saves website bandwidth and also saves the user having to wait while downloading them all (even cached takes it's time)

it also has the search so you don't really have to go hunting for a specific smiley either (if it's got a decent name). In time I'm hoping people will tag the smilies as it's also got a tag feature so again searching for the smiley you want should be easy and fast

I had a few projects but I though it was a project I'd go for as I've seen other smiley programs and I'm trying to improve the features. It's possible to create packages for the likes of Smi1eyCentra1 etc without all the need to install their adaware software to access the 10,000+ smileys or other websites that actually host 1,000 smileys that you have to load up and hunt through.

I keep foregetting this can be used for images also and not just smileys so in time you can have a collection of pics with instant img code to post into message (or directly into an email) in seconds. An example is the favourite of Jimmalenko's, the STFU pic. In fact I'll make a package of that thread page as an example if someone has the link to the page (again it will save having to download the page every time just to get a specific pic)

along with many other features I'm wanting to add, the next feature I'm hoping to add is a WYSIWYG editor (that autosaves) as I also sometimes hate the restricted space when replying (I was the one who asked Baldrick to expand them here) or losing my reply for some reason

Browser should be caching them but nonetheless , if you had the page local you could also have the smilies local. wish I knew more about .js. You could combine the local page so interacts with one on your server. Look for updates to smilie package etc. Only benefit though is if you could get them to insert like you do here, one click instead drag and drop. Be nice if everyone had PHP on there windows machine, i could write all kinds of cool stuff.

Anyhow good luck with your project, I'm just throwing out some ideas for you.

with the amount of stuff on websites these days the cache may not last long if you do a lot of browsing at various sites . It just loaded them all again for me when I tried

In the very first versions 2 years ago I had the click action to insert but it had problems keeping window focus so I went with the drag n drop. I do want the click insert feature adding but it will probably be 2 click as one click might be click accidentally. I'm not the coder of this program (just like DVDStripper), I just gave my coder friend my ideas and he puts it into reality . I'm just the 'pretty' face at the shop counter

if anyone is interested there is a new version that doesn't have the URL link in it so it works great with the Forum code setting . It also allows you to add/remove packages. Obviously there isn't that many packages yet but in time there will be . If you want me to add some packages of images then just say so

OK, depending on your PC setup you don't even have to install the program. It works on both Windows XP & Vista. You will however need to put it somewhere in a folder (Program Files is where it would normally go) You will also be missing shortcuts to start the program but again you can easily make a shortcut

obviously you need the package files to go with the program . You can get the default set of smileys with around 1,000 downloading this file below and put the folder into the same folder as SmileyPic (Guide is HERE on how to do this). If you want any help feel free to ask

so no worries about anything installing anything as you will see the 3 files in the zip file it uses. Feel free to use any anti-virus scanners on the files as you won't find a thing in it at all, just access to loads of smileys

at the end of the day it's a simple application to make selecting smileys a little more easier and giving more choice, enjoy
