Does anyone know if there is a "shuffle" or "random" playback function for mp3 or other audio with the 5986? Was there with the 5960?

  3. They arrived at Best Buy today, so I just picked one up ($65). As far as I can tell, the USB is 2.0. My reasoning is that I was unable to play VOB files from my external harddrive on the 5960, but this one plays them without any stuttering.

Can anyone else confirm files that didn't play on the old player, but do now?

  4. Bobsolo, what kind of bitrates are the VOB files you've tested?

    Does that help?

Thanks for the update. A USB 1.1 port should be able to transfer around 6000 kbps. A file with an average bitrate of ~3000 might not have any peaks over 6000. It would be nice if you could try a higher bitrate file.

  7. I just got this player along with my new 1080p tv. I seem to recall it was 64.99 at BB. My tv comes tomorrow but I've tried it on a 1080i tv and it looks pretty good. I'm interested in seeing it at 1080p.

I would like to know how video quality is on phillps players such as this compared to other plays. I only got it because I already know the quality of my xbox360 dvd player isnt good. I wanted a good upconverting dvd player.

As a suggestion, use a Superbit DVD as the source if you have one (or can borrow or rent one). A high action sequence from a Superbit VOB should pretty much max out the bitrate.

  9. I don't have any superbits, so I'll rent on this weekend, rip it and try that VOB.

I know this may be a stupid question, but can you connect your computer to the USB port?

  13. Bad news. I got a hold of Snatch Superbit (6949 avg, 8812 peak) and tried watching the VOB from my WD HD. No dice. It was completely stuttering and the audio sounded like it was dubbed by Steven Hawkins.

Oh well. At lease the lower bitrate stuff (3,000) works.

  14. Thanks for the report bobsolo.

  15. Ditto. Thanks! Amazing that they're still using USB 1.1 ports on a new player released in April of 2007. Hopefully someone else will get a clue a come out with similarly priced/featured unit that has USB 2.0 sometime in the near future. Frankly, I don't really mind waiting since Philips quality control has gone down the toilet recently.

I just bought the 5982 along with a 500 GB external. At first the 5982 didn't recognize the external. The external was preformatted in NTFS. Using the format program discussed for the 5960, I formatted it in FAT32. The 5982 now recognizes the external hard drive. The external is a Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 @ 500 gigs. Purchased both at Best Buy this afternoon. Now I need a TV with HDMI to get the full benefits. For the moment I am using a 23" HD LCD with the component input.

I have a Westinghouse 1080p TV and am trying to get the Phillips DVD player to output at 1080p. Currently it won't let me select the 1080p option. It stops at 1080i. I have the two connected with HDMI but I read something in the manual about having to use DVI to HDMI to use the 1080p option. Is that true, or has anyone been able to get 1080p out of just pure HDMI?

  24. Just picked up this awesome player from best buy, the philips 5982/37, and I'm very happy with it. Finally a player that will play all the DVD+Rs and CD-Rs with assorted media that I've created over the years. My one issue with this player is it doesn't recognize my usb flash drive. It recognized my ipod (just tested it to make sure usb port was working and it was, was able to play music through it using the ipod) but I placed several different file types (mp3s, jpgs, mpegs, avis) on my usb flash drive with no success. It said unsupported device. This is the usb flash drive I used. Is this function not working for all drives? Is there a drive that is proven to work? Why doesn't this one work? A-DATA PD8(Turbo Speed) 2GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model PD8 2.0 2GB BLUE

Think I just found my answer in the above post. It is the formated file type? I will check this tomorrow morning.

  25. This page has a list of drives that work with the 5960.

Any of those should work with the 5982. Remember it must be formatted with the FAT file system.

funny.they buy 2 to 3k TV's just to hookup a cheapo player .major waste

  27. 2 to 3 grand? Hmmm....

I paid $749 and use it for my computer too. 32" and yes it is hooked up to a Phillips 5960, Dish VIP622 for HD and so on.

Major waste is one persons opinion. IMHO output from the phillips makes standard DVDs look good. They look better than my old SDTV did. I also have a Pioneer 531h hooked up via Component and it looks no better than the Phillips, no Worse either.

The Phillips was a cheap and easy way to upscale NTSC & PAL and easy region free for when I had Nicheflix which rents DVDs from all regions and formats. You are warned when signing up that you will need region free and ability to play NTSC or PAL.

I ended up dropping them because they were out of state and a week turnaround was the norm. However they were good source for odd and hard to find titles. The other reason is lack of free time, I have some Netflix here that have been sitting 2 weeks already waiting for me to get some free time to watch.

Bottom line the Phillips fills a niche for me and allows me to play things my Sony changer and my Pioneer won't play. To me for the low use I give it paying for an Oppo would have been the waste. The USB input is icing on the cake for playing pictures and music.

So has anyone actually got the 1080p output selected? Did they do it using a HDMI to HDMI connection?

  29. If you read through this thread:

    http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=18&threadid=724692&start=200

you'll see some people who managed 1080p with HDMI 1.3 cables.

  30. The player won't read my A-Data 2GB USB Flash Drive, looked on the "good" list on the http://www.phunkyfish.com/article/4/philips-dvp-596012 website. I checked. It was originally FAT file system. I formatted it over to FAT32 and tried again and still no go.
