I'm converting a MPEG2 with PCM audio to MP4 AVC with AAC audio. I can't decide between using 224 kbps or 384 kbps for audio: 384 is obviously better but will be some compatibility issues (players that can't play it)? Is 384 overkill? Space is not an issue in this case.

  2. 2 channels or 6 channels?
For aac a good choice is 64k x channel.

384 KBit/s is way overkill for stereo AAC. Even 224 is more than enough to sound transparent even with good headphones and ears.

EAC3 224kbps and an excellent choice especially if you have no problem for the weight of the audio EAC3 see AC3 will give you better results than AAC

Thanks. This video I'm converting is a concert. That's why I'm trying to keep the audio bitrate relatively high.

What about using quality based encoding, as you possibly do when encoding video, and let the bitrate be whatever it needs to be?

I generally use QAAC with it's default quality setting. The 6 channel soundtrack I just finished encoding came in at 457 kb/s.
The only stereo soundtracks I've converted lately have been Fawlty Towers episodes. The AAC versions were around 180 kb/s.

I think all the command line AAC encoders have a quality encoding mode these days.
