  1. hey.
i followed the guides that are available in the website. But i can't seem to get it. I need help on converting dat to avi.

first i used vcd gear to decode the dat file. I followed the instructions on the web. there were a few errors on the dat file. VCD gear said that it managed to fix it.

Then after i decoded the file, i open virtual dub. When i tried to load the file, this error came out.

MPEG: File ended unexpectedly during parsing - file may
    be damaged or incomplete

does anyone know how to fix this? need help. thx

  4. Two idea's

    1. If i remember correctly, VirtualDub can open the *.DAT file directly.

    2. If the *.DAT file is from SVCD then VirtualDub won't be able to open it even if you convert to MPEG file. You'll need to use VirtualDub MPEG-2.

I know, I know, but DAT files are not neccessarily MPEG-1. Remember the VCD Header trick?

  6. Quickly,

Some DVD players don't like the SVCD format. If you use TMPGEnc to remux the source MPEG-2 you can make your SVCD appear as a VCD to the player.

The "Trick" has to do with making a VCD, not converting a VCD to another format?

MPEG is a standard, and they only come in MPEG-1, and MPEG-2. An MP3 for example is actually a MPEG-1 / Layer 3.

It doesn't work the same way as AVI if thats what your thinking. AVI is a container that contains an audio stream (usually compressed), and a video stream (usually compressed).

Video Compression - DivX, XviD, 3ivX, etc, etc.
    Audio Compression - MP3, MP2, etc, etc.

MPEG is a container and a type of compression (to my knowledge)

Video is always MPEG-1 or MPEG-2
Audio is usually a flavor of MPEG but..........

I don't know if the *.VOB files you see on a DVD are a subset of the MPEG standard or their own format.

    Video is MPEG-1 or MPEG-2
Audio is usually AC3, DTS, rarely MPEG.

to check for MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 you could try MPEGProperties:

(i hope i havn't screwed too much of this info up, i'm here seeking help myself)
