What you are seeing (or rather not seeing) is actually normal.

All televisions have what is known as "OVERSCAN"

This means that the extreme edges of the image (all 4 sides) are slightly masked.

However ... a computer monitor does not have OVERSCAN so when you work with video on a computer you see the extreme edges you normally would NOT see on a normal TV be it a tube or plasma or rear projection etc.

Now I don't know what type of AVI you have as AVI can be any number of things (called codecs) but most codecs do work so that a proper resize from the AVI to the DVD will be from a width of 640 to 720

So try to not let it bother you because nothing is wrong!

    P.S.
There is a tool called FitCD that can help you to calulate how to resize from one format (such as DivX AVI or Xvid AVI files) to DVD format. This program can be used to account for overscan. It does this by enlarging the image propotionally bigger from the original but not as big as the DVD format uses (720x480 for NTSC or 720x576 for PAL). Basically the image gets bigger but not as big as it can get with a small black border around it. If you overdo it then you could see the black border on your TV but the idea is to resize the image so TV OVERSCAN is minimized.

  3. Dont know if this would work because the previous advice is very good, since you dindt give much information on the file but here is my advice:

when you are setting the tmpgencode in the settings->advance tab
select in video arrange method: center (keepaspect ratio)

this will give you the whole movie as you see in the display
