  1. I've just caputured a one and a half hour video from an old VHS tape. It is 4 GB. I used a Leadtek TV2000 XP caputure card. I try using VitualDub with my newly made MPEG to shrink it down and I get an error message: MPEG Import Filter: Pack Synchronization Error.

    See this for reference:

If the above doesn't work, try creating a new mpeg with TMPGEnc by going to File>MPEG Tools>Merge and Cut.

  4. The VirtualDub mod opened the file. How do I shrink my video?

Virtualdub doesn't "shrink" per se. It only allows you to compress your video to something like Divx, Xvid, Huffyuv etc.

If you want to transcode you'll need something like rejig but I believe you'll have to demultiplex it first.

You could also try authoring a DVD and using DVD Shrink, but then again your video is already undr 4.7gb.

Why don't you explain more about what it is you're trying to do.

You will have to use a codec to shrink it down. Select Video-->Compression and a codec like DivX or Xvid, etc. Then save the video under a new file name.

  7. Under Video and Compression, there were no divx or xvid choices, so I picked a windows mpeg compression and nothing happened. In terms of explaining what I want, I just want to make a decent looking normal sized video file of my VHS tapes (in the 700mb range). All of the videos I get off the internet are around 700mb and are very good quality. I was wondering how they do that.

Possibly a program which converts mpg to a smaller avi. I have such a program that converts large dvd files to good quality small avi's.

Did you save the file under a new name, and are you looking for aparticular size video?
    Hello.

  9. I got VirtualDub to convert the file (with compression). It only got 10% smaller. I am looking for a 700 MB size for 1 movie.

It doesn't look like you know how to set up the compressor you chose in Virtualdub. Until you learn you ought to check out Dr. Divx. It's simple to use and can create a divx file of a specified size very easily.

  11. Dr. Divx did what I needed and very easily at that. Thank you very much!
