This is how I convert an .avi to mpg2.
First I load the file into Virtualdubmod and if it asks to rewrite the headers say "yes"
Then from the top menu "streams" select "stream list"
Then select Demux to extract the audio into a .mp3
Then close and open EO Video http://www.eo-video.com/
Add the file to playlist and click on the convert tab at bottom
uncheck the audio (since you already have it as an mp3 file)
    Settings as follows
    Compression: no compression
    Color Depth: 24 bit
Output size: As sourse max values
    Picture fitting: Maintain Aspect
    Frame rate: 29.97
Picture quality and key frame rate is n/a

For output format select AVI 2.0 (file size no limited)
    then click on output
select your directory and click convert
Then you can click start to start converting.
After that you can render in any video program (Preimere, Vegas 4.0, ect)
Just put you uncompressed .avi into that progam and don't forget your .mp3 for your audio.

Tried that. It won't reconize the audio. Plus with vegas, I can make it from stereo to Dobly digital surround sound.

extract the audio with virtualdub, then depending on what format the audio is, change the file format from *.wav to whatever it is (.mp3, .ac3, or whatever) then convert it into an actual wav with Heada3he, TMPGenc should recognize it then.

Hi to the Gang and All

Having read Scottvf's post and supreme 2k's post I am intrigued as a neewbie, I downloaded a file which I then put through TMGE I had a few problems which I resolved, however once I had run it through TMGE I then ran the file through Instant Copy X which created the necessary vob files and audio files which I then burnt to a DVD hey Presto.

After the TMGE has authored this file which incidentally come up as a windows media Icon. Therefore does that mean that I can use TMGE to burn it to a DVD without putting it through Instant Copy X as this would save some time?

Sorry if I seem to be missing the point or appear to be a Mega Nerd I have sort of combined what I’ve learnt here and what I already knew

    Yours gracefully Towbar

    Sorry for this post chaps.

I think I may have answered my own question, whilst looking at TMPGE I have noticed that on the final page of the wizard there is a box to check which reads:

Output Video and audio as indiviual Elementary Files
I have now checked this box and hopefully that wiil give me individual vob files etc But i have just on other question on some of the post i have seen that to some people Nero is a NO NO when it comes to burning DVD's as a rule i use Instant Copy X what are the problems with NERO

This will only create a seperate .m2v and .mp2(or wav) file, not VOB's. You'll need a seperate program to author the elementary streams to the proper DVD file structure. You might want to have a look at the "How To Author" section on the left of this page.

For every person that complains about Nero you'll find a lot more that have no problems at all. However if Instant Copy works for you, stick with what works.

One size does not fit all. Considering the almost infinite combinations of software/hardware there will be some conflicts with any software.

That said Nero 6 Ultra (if it plays nice on your system, it does for me) is one hell of a program that covers almost any aspect of video and audio, without having to dwelve into many technical aspects. Nero Vision Express will accept almost any source you throw at it, AVI (Dvix, Xvid), VOB, Mpeg1/2, PAL and NTSC (all combined into one project if you like) and usually provide a finished DVD easily, with Dolby 2 audio... without the need to worry about aspect ratios, bitrates, separate encoders, etc. Nero Recode (needs a ripper like Decrypter though) will do everything DVD Shrink does and more.

InstantCopy 8, if it plays nice with your rig (a little twitchy for some though) produces some of the best vid quality out there, only surpassed by apps that use CCE to re-encode.

It's true that you can encode your vids with Nero, but it doesn't perform this task very well at all. I can't stress enough how poor the Nero mpeg encoder is. It's easily the worst I've seen. It gives you ZERO control over the various encoding settings and totally sacrifices quality for ease of use. But if you're happy with it, good for you.

I've heard that so many times I figured I'd try MainConcept as a test, on a few VCD to DVD conversions. An encoder that cost more than the whole Nero 6 package. After nurmerous adjustments and false starts to get it's fancy settings correct, and using it's 2 pass method, which takes quite a bit of time, I failed to notice any signicant difference over simply popping the files into NVE and letting it handle all the details, including Dolby 2 audio output.

Must be my old eye's I guess, as I've also found DVD Shrink's transcoded output to be inferior to most commercial programs on long movies.

To each his own. I guess, but the latest version of NVE (2129) seems to do a very credible job and makes easy work of such things. And although there isn't much support for it yet, Nero's new MPEG4 (Nero Digital) option produces very nice results.

I agree with that assessment. Especially when you use 2-pass mode. There may not be much support for it but then again it's practically idiot-proof.
