    in that case
the 107 is your best choice. Its 8x burn and supports +/- formats!

    $160 Here

I have heard it as low as $99 with a rebate, but it doesnt seem to apply anymore - so keep your eye out

www.dealmac.com - a great place to look for rebates on products your interested in

Get the Pioneer 107, the best way to go... Period.

  5. The hyper link here for the Pioneer 107 appears to be an internal drive. Is an external drive available directly from Pioneer?

Pioneer indicates that one 8X blank DVD will be shipped with their internal drive but my research found that no 8X DVD-R discs are available, anywhere.

LaCie's external 8X DVD drive using a Pioneer drive, ships with only a 4X disc. The results are 4X DVD copying speeds!

So why buy a 8X drive now if the media is not available?

The thing I don't like about the Pioneer drives is the 2MB buffer, which at 8 X (when available) is next to nothing. Other drives have 8 MB buffers. To my way of thinking (with absolutely no data to support this argument) this increases the risk of failed burns. On the other hand, I believe Pioneer makes excellent laser units. My laserdisc and DVD players are Pioneer. But my DVD burner is Sony.

I'm satsified for now with a 4X burner, especially since it's not worth it to me to spend extra on faster media anyway. Eventually, of course, it will be hard to find quality 4X media, but by then I'll probably have a dual-layer DVD burner.

External drives are avaliable, but not directly from pioneer - heck that would be way too expensive.

Meritline sells an external pioneer 107 here

Meritline again has 8x in both + and - formats

Excellent point, Vintageman. Incidentally, the full Apple support for the Pioneer 107 requires OS 10.3.3 or else a patch is required.

    Too true
Oh, I asuume its well known that if you have more than one drive bay, the superdrive has to be the terminal drive [master] for it to function fully with Finder / iApp support.

107 is an 8x dvdrw drive
    106 is a 4x dvdrw drive

in term of the fact you can burn a disk in what 7min with the 107 id say it is better. Support is always limited as a new drive comes out. the 107 is the newest drive. I know that its now fully supported in 10.3.3 and works with no problems in older systems though toast titanium with no problems

I now see that galactica, thanks, but who the heck is PioData (made by Taiyo-Yuden) ?.

LaCie external drives (loaded with Pioneer 107) and I swear by LaCie, sales department only recommends Sony & Verbatim media for their drives.

And besides, I choose not to pay more than $2 a disc, not $3.39!.

As i recall Taiyo Yuden is one of the three (?) makers of dual-layer discs that were accounced last week, so they can't be all that bad.

Also no one has mentioned that several 8x drives have firmware updates available so they can burn 4x discs at 8x speeds.

    Cheerio,

PS I wouldn't pay too much attention to your sales department. There's a forum on this website about recommended media. Worth a look

The flash firmware, stop me if I'm wrong, can only be applied via a PC computer or Virtual PC which doesn't work on my G5.

Secondly, and here's where you geeks can chime in, the firmwere update that allows a 8X DVD drive to work with 4X media, tricks the drive into assuming the right media is aboard. The 8X media is specifically manufactured for 8X drives. And I think I read that the best you can expect in speed enhancement after a firmware upgrade is 6X otherwise your results are sources!

If you cant run virtual PC you could just take the burner to some friend who has a PC (gasp! friends on the dark side!), plug it in and flash it. If that's too much trouble then just stick to buying official 8x discs (mucho dinero).

flashing on a PC is the safest way to go about what you want to do. I dont recommend flashing via VPC first off, and 2nd off you cant run it on a G5

just give it some time, the disks will decrease in price

Yes. What those earlier posters suggested

All that talk about flashing firmware was just so you can burn 4x discs at 8x in an 8x burner.

NEC ND-2500 works perfectly well with my Sawtooth G4. Using LaCie supportfile, all iApps recognize the drive. Cost me 150€ here in Finland few weeks ago. 2500 is 8x +/-R burner.

  22. I just got a Pacific Digital mach 8 8x DVD +/- burner for $120 with a $40 rebate ($80!!!!) at office max a week ago. I applied patchburn 2 & it works beautifully, quickly, quietly & cheaply in panther.

Oh yeah, I popped it into a usb 2.0 case that I had laying around because I was alittle worried about booting issues on my quicksilver 867.

It actually turns out that the drive is a LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-851S. It gets 40x cdr as well. If you can find one, I highly suggest it - especially at $80!!!!!
