errors found on DVD-R using DVDInfo Pro

I purchased some RitekG04 DVD-R from PCClub and Meritline thinking that this is the DVD I should be using for archiving my important data from all the great reviews here. But after running the error test with DVDInfo Pro, I found tons of errors, some 3000+ errors! Is this supposed to happen? I tried testing a couple of PS2 games of mine, and they turned up just as many errors as the Riteks. What do those errors mean? What is an acceptable number of errors that a DVD-R can have? I know for CD-Rs, the kprobe can find lots of C1 errors but that is supposedly ok, and even some C2s are acceptable. But I have no idea when it comes to DVD. Can some one shed some light on this?

Interesting. I don't test every disk, just when I have problems. So far zero problems, and zero errors. I use mostly RITEK G04's.

I have some TDK 2x -R's that skip in one of my players. The disks are error free from DVDINFOPRO and dont' skip in PC and other player.

Sounds like you have some issues. You should have zero errors. I would look at your drive as the source of your problems. It could be bad media (stored in a hot warehouse for months maybe?), go pickup some other disks and compare? Try burning at 2x and see if you get the same errors?

DVDInfoPro can test your drive; Doe the errors happen at random or at the end?

Followup: What are your system specs? you simply can't drop a DVDRW drive into a machine and have it work (there's more to it than that, like ASPI layers).

I'm running dual 1ghz P3 with 512mb of pc133 ram on W2k SP4. The burner is a brand new Sony DRU-510a. I tried burning the PCClub Riteks at 2x and that gave me twice the amount of errors. The errors are pretty spread out throughout the disc, not just 1 particular spot or at the end. I also have some Imation DVD+R that are RICOHJPNR01 they have the same amount of errors. (3000+) I guess there's something wrong with the drive? but it's brand new and it hasn't been used for more than 5 DVDs. I burned W2K SP4 network install as a test cause I know it verifies itself before installing, even with those errors, it verified ok. Maybe there's some settings on the DVDInfo that I was supposed to change? I left everything at default. Basically install->test.

another question I have is, everyone seems to LOVE RitekG04, and use it exclusively. (ok almost everyone) I remember in the CDR days people all swear by Taiyo Yudens because 1) no coasters, burns perfect, plays perfect and 2) on simulated aging test, it out lasts most other brands. Now when it comes to DVD, no one seems to care or even mention #2 anymore. As long as it burns and plays fine, it's gold. But what happens to that valuable data 2 or 3 months down the road? 2 or 3 years down the road? 20 or 30 years down the road? I know there are DVDs made by TY as well, but everyone seems to love Ritek cause they're cheaper and "burns without errors" That to me just seems like the bare minimum a DVDr should at least do. Does no one care how long their data last anymore? I would think packing 6 times more data onto a single DVD would make #2 weigh in even more. Is there any studies or simulations done on DVD media? Not just burn test, but aging test as well.

Good question. Since 1/3 of my CDR's are dead, who knows? Most of them have died from 'Sharpie Markers'......

They died from Sharpies? Crap, ALL of my CDRs were labled with sharpies. All the CDRs had warnings saying use only felt tip pens such as sharpie to lable it only! I hope I didn't ruin my collections.

well I changed the interface from SPTI to ASPI and there are no errors now. I guess that was the problem. The question still remains, which DVD media will last longer? Does anyone care?

Boosted, I am usually a "DIY" guy but I guess on this one I am lazy. How did you find out you were using SPTI instead of ASPI, and then how did you change it?

I ask because DVDInfoPro is reporting tons of errors on my Ritek discs. The discs play fine on my standalone Panasonic, and in fact on every standalone I have tried. But 10,000+ errors !!! Yow!

Also, what are the implications for data storage? If I backup My Documents onto a DVD, how do I know I can faithfully restore them?

Any reply to the SPTI/ASPI question much appreciated. I know I have ASPI installed but this is one issue I don't know much about.

Hit the first button at the top of DVDinfo, the one that looks like a monitor, then you will find a box to select ASPI/SPTI.

Switched to ASPI as you said. DVDInfoPro now reads my Riteks w/o errors. Whew!!! Thanks.

I got to the point where I don't even bother the errors found with dvdinfopro. I have about 30 dvd (burned on crap Princo and some on good TDK ricoh) that all had error reported with dvdinfopro. Some disc, it's little, while on other disc over 500 plus errors. But everyone of them play fine (no skip, no pixelization) on my standalone player (Pioneer DV-260).

But hey, if you burn em and get no error with dvdinfopro, MORE POWER TO YOU

I was literally getting 10,000+ errors on some discs. All discs showed 1,000+ errors - even when burned at 1x on Ritek G04.

I have only checked one disc since changing the interface (SPTI-->ASPI). It showed ZERO errors.

So evidently DVDInfoPro can't read discs well when using the default interface.

Change the interface as village idiot said and see what happens.
