I have seen many USB capture devices which seem good but was hoping it would be possible to capture from my video recorder to my laptop using the Firewire socket rather than USB.
Of course this is dependant on my asumption that Firewire is quicker than USB and it would save me considerable time.
I don't want to open my laptop and stick bits in it so an external device is most desirable although if there is any recommended internal hardware for the job please let me know.

I like Adaptec VideOh DVD for direct to mpg, but I think I've read they've changed it since my model.
Try looking in Capture Cards to the left. Lots of user comments on many products.
