Hey,
does encoding analog avi capture with 2 or 4 passes make a difference?
is the video sharper? I assume you would be able to fit more video if you use 4 passes versus 2 passes on one dvdr disc, at the cost of time of course?
TIA

Yes, but will you notice? Maybe. Assuming you are talking about using CCE as your encoder, once you go beyond two passes you start hitting the law of diminishing returns. Each extra pass wil improve quality, but less so than the previous one, so the benefit reduces. Many say that more than 3 passes is not worth the time.does encoding analog avi capture with 2 or 4 passes make a difference?
Could be.is the video sharper?
No. Multiple passes does not reduce the filesize. You must specify an Average bitrate to be used during the encode and it is this value that determines the final filesize (plus movie length of course). Multipass simply makes better use of the available bitrate throughout the movie, giving better quality than a single pass in most cases.I assume you would be able to fit more video if you use 4 passes versus 2 passes on one dvdr disc, at the cost of time of course? -
You can however, specify a lower average bitrate and use multipass (4 max) to get the (preceived) quality back to where you were with 1 pass higher bitrate.Originally Posted by bugster
This would give you a smaller file at the "same" quality. You can also use the 'robshot' method to manually allocate the bits better.
Unfortunately, there is no magic formula. Source differs. It takes time to sqeeze every bit out.
