    I have downloaded CX2DVD v3.7.3 to try out conversion in comparison to FAVC and DVD Flick (I don't care about menus). When I started the conversion process the status bar showed a message saying: encoding pass 1 of 1. As far as I'm concerned some time ago VSO implemented 2-pass processing. Yet, I haven't found the place where I can activate that.

    Can anybody help?

    regedit

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VSO\ConvertXToDVD\3.0\settings]

    "enc_twopass"="FALSE"

    Change it to TRUE

    You now have the hack, but I believe 2 pass (a silly waste of VSO's time) will be officially available in version 4. CX2D's implementation of ffmpeg is considerably more customized than Flick's vanilla one. There has been much discussion and testing concerning 2 pass (nothing gained) in VSO's forums along with the difference between the various encoding 'profiles' and how bitrate is distributed between each. Poster ckhouston goes into much detail explaining each. Switching from Fast bilinear resampler to Lanczos though, should be a nice touch.

    CXD2D's emphasis has been mainly for speed and converting downloaded files. CXD2D 3 is a very versatile app, much more comprehensive than a simple converter like Flick.

    If you want to try for a better encode try MrC's AVStoDVD (free), locking in HCenc 2 pass encoding.

    two pass is only good for high quality input files....if you have a DV source, then two pass has a major impact on quality. VSO's program was originally for downloaded movies...in this case, quality is already poor so two pass is a waste of time. But if you do not want to author yourself and want a quick job, then this program could be for you. So Two pass is NOT a waste of time, but is a good extension of the program to the home user who does not want to author themselves. Again, two pass is a waste of time for poor sources...but NOT for good ones. Let's get this clear here.
