  1. I created an SVCD mpeg using TMPGEnc using VBR-2pass and when I play this file using any media player.... I cannot seek to anywhere in the mpeg. It starts and runs fine... but why can I not jump ahead in the mpeg??? Any ideas?

  2. use TMPGEnc's MPEG tools... demux and then remux the video + audio.

make sure you tell MPEG tools that you're working with SVCD, not VCD...

  3. I will definitely try that... but I don't see the point. Doesn't the demux and then remux simply put the file right back where it was? What does this change that could possibly make it work?

  4. try it...might work

  5. Nope didn't work... thanks for the help though... i'll try anything

I noticed an error in the original DivX that I was coverting from during playback. The screeen goes all screwy for a few secs...

I'm still not sure why though I can't seek in the mpeg... does anyone else that uses VBR 2-pass encoding have this same problem?

What did you have your GOP structure set to?

What are you using to burn you SVCD's?

Are you using an older version of Nero?

  7. GOP structure = IBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBBPBB

    Number of I = 1
    Number of P = 10
    Number of B = 2

It's not so much what I'm using to burn the SVCDs that I'm worried about... it's the resulting MPEG-2 file from TMPGenc that is not seekable!

Are all MPEG-2 files that are encoded using VBR 2-pass always unseekable? (you know, slide the bar over to the middle of the movie then Windows MEdia Player craps out... other media players crap out too)

But I am using VCDeasy to burn my SVCDs... I don't use my Nero anymore because of it's lack of chapter support.

media player seek bar will not work properly on VBR encoded material .. some other players have the same problem

  11. What is point of this GOP structure?

And why will the above posted response help me?

I just don't see why I should change the defaults.

If all VBR encoded MPEG-2 files don't seek... then what is the point? I'll probably just stick with CBR... they seem to work fine for me.

    WickedDVD,

I found out why your files were not seeking, you need to add scan offsets. To do this demultiplex the files then remultiplex them with bbMPEG using these settings:

After this you should be able to seek and goto any time on your MPEG file. It took me a while to figure this out, hope this helps.
