Can DVD Shrink Decrypt? If so then no need for DVD Decryptor.
In looking over the guides I came apon this:
DVD9 to DVD5 with DVD Shrink
+Very fast
+Free
+Built in DVD Decrypting
-No burning
-Can't set exact size

YES, it does decrypt.
I copied Ice Age DVD just last night (first-time experience) from original DVD to a DVD-R, took me 40-45 mins from loading DVD to getting a copy.
I copied just the movie, no extras or menus. There was no compression involved thou. After I 'Backed up' the files onto harddrive, I used Nero Express (came with the drive) to burn.
P.S. I'm sort of a newbie too, just got my NEC ND-1300A the other day, Ica Age is the only DVD I have thou. -
yes, DVDshrink can decrypt...
but it's not the best at it...there are dedicated ripping proggies that have been revised many, many, many times over the years to become very, very good at ripping
i personally use DVDdecryptor to rip to the hdd first and then use DVDshrink to process it afterwards...
------
keep in mind, DVDshrink can NOT remove RCE, PUO, and (i believe) macrovision...
so, if you want any of those to be removed, you will have to use a dedicated ripping proggie like smartripper or dvddecryptor...both of which are completely FREE -
If DVD shrink can't decrypt it, will it warn you first? or just attempt to shrink decrypted video?
I also use DVD Decryptor but am trying to simplify my process.
- DVD Decryptor
- DVD Shrink
- Nero Express -
same method i use...plz don't tell me you want it to be even simpler.... :POriginally Posted by MachineMan
cuz that's already pretty simple and straight-forward -
You can Definitely cut the middle man(dvd decryptor) and just use Shrink and Nero with no problems at all. I've backed up my whole DvD collection without any problems. The quality is exactly the same!!! I still don't understand why people use Decryptor when Shrink is just as good. And with the all the movies I've backed up I haven't come across one movie with RCE, PUO, or macrovision. So It's up to you whether you want to waste your time with Decryptor. Shrink will give you the exact same results and you'll get an error message if it can't decrypt a movie.

problem is, DVDshrink isn't as good. there have been numerous posts on DVDshrink's forums about its ripping problems..... ripping with DVDdecryptor to the hdd first and then letting DVDshrink process it is a much safer way.Originally Posted by Jevon
most likely because you haven't noticed themOriginally Posted by Jevon
- RCE: you wouldn't notice because you're playing the DVDs in the region it was meant for. try taking a RCE protected region 1 DVD and playing it in a region 2 DVD-ROM. there may be problems.
also, if you leave the RCE in the DVD, then you will have a hard time playing your backup in another region.
- PUO: you definitely have enountered this....Prohibited User Operations. whenever you try to fast foward the FBI warning, but the DVD player doesn't allow you to...that's PUO. you can remove those restrictions w/ DVDdecryptor...DVDshrink can't
- Macrovision: not sure if DVDshrink has the ability to remove this or not...but assuming DVDshrink doesn't...you won't notice the problem unless you're recording the DVD through analog...if you don't remove, then your backups won't be able to be recorded through analog..(i.e. to VHS and/or analog captures)
dunno how important this is...but just pointing it out... -
There have also been numerous posts about DVDdecryptor ripping problems, so It all depends on your computer! Like I said before, I have never had a problem using Shrink to Decrypt DVD's!P.J.Poopyhead Wrote: problem is, DVDshrink isn't as good. there have been numerous posts on DVDshrink's forums about its ripping problems..... ripping with DVDdecryptor to the hdd first and then letting DVDshrink process it is a much safer way.
I don't travel out of the USA very often so this is not a problem for me. I'm not sure if I'd bring any of my DVD's with me even if I did.Poopyhead Wrote: RCE: you wouldn't notice because you're playing the DVDs in the region it was meant for. try taking a RCE protected region 1 DVD and playing it in a region 2 DVD-ROM. there may be problems.
If you re-author and back up the movie only like I do, than you will not have this problem. If you want to fast forward thru the FBI warning and take your movies to Europe than Poopyhead is right! Use Decryptor first!!Poopyhead Wrote: - PUO: you definitely have enountered this....Prohibited User Operations. whenever you try to fast foward the FBI warning, but the DVD player doesn't allow you to...that's PUO. you can remove those restrictions w/ DVDdecryptor...DVDshrink can't
Otherwise:
Just Use Shrink! -
DVDdecryptor ripping problems??? there have been numerous DVDs that DVDdecryptor ripped flawlessly while others have had problems....Originally Posted by Jevon
DVDshrink's ripping app isn't as well developed (and with much less options) as DVDdecryptor and smartripper...since DVDshrink's main purpose is transcoding...

furthermore, if you ever encounter commercial DVD5, you don't even need DVDshrink....DVDdecryptor will rip and burn...nothing else is needed..

ppl have gotten around this problem by using DVDdecryptor to rip to the hdd first.Originally Posted by dvdshrink

Hey poopyhead
you know all that stuff you said about dvd decrypter removing all that stuff?
is dvd decrypter already set up to remove it all or do you have to change some options to do it?
cause when i backed up my Simpson region 1 it would not go past the fbi warning on my pc or region 2 dvd player
it was a while ago when i did this back up so i may not of used decrypter i might of just used dvd shrink. i cant quite remember
but now that i've learnt more i always use
decrypter
dvd shrink

well....not sure which version of DVDdecryptor you used back then..cuz i'm not exactly sure when DVDdecrypter started having each of these functions...Originally Posted by watty252
i'm referring to the latest version...and yes, those options are automatically checked...
however, if you are indeed ripping a RCE protected disc, you need to make sure you set in DVDdecryptor the region of the RCE protected disc before you start ripping. -
Cheers poopy head
so i'll have to change decrypter to region 1 for my region 1 disc's
makes sence really
thanks again

I personally use DVD Decrypter only infrequently, since I primarily don't even notice the encryption on discs any more.
I have AnyDVD. Lovely piece of code, that.
