I want to be able to capture videos straight to DVD file format eg. vob without having to record them in mpeg first as it takes time to convert from mpeg to DVD format. I was wondering if there's any free or trialware programs on here or elsewhere that allows me to capture video STRAIGHT to vobs and other required DVD files without having to record to mpeg or avi first?

You'll need some powerful machine to do this.DV is not a capture at the first place.Normally, a DV "capture" transfers the data from the FW port to your harddisk at constant transferrate of around 3.5 MByte/Sec.
What you want is:
1. compress this stream on the fly in Realtime to mpeg-2
2. and remux/mux video and audio to create a DVD compliant stream
3. And generate the correct DVD structure (vobs & co) also in real time.
Is that correct?
How many dropped frames do you expect with such procedure, give at normal DV transfer with a decent machine you'll get 1 drop in 2-3 min?
Or don't you care about dropped frames? -
Actually I have the same question. I need to take DV to DVD format in the easiest quickest way possible?? any ideas?

Ulead's dvdworkshop and movie factory 2 does realtime mpeg2. I haven't tried it so I don't know how good it is.

Thanks for trying to help.
It's just that I have a deadline to get this movie put into DVD format and my uncle reckons there may be programs available that capture video straight from VCR to computer in DVD vob format. I wish there were programs that can do straight capture to DVD format as it will save me having to stuff around with video settings.
The biggest problem I'm having is I'm having problems getting 720x576 resolution in Ulead when recording, I can't get a higher resolution than 720x480 even in PAL format!!! I'm using a Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 128mb video card. Now I can record in 720x576 in Virtual Dub and Free VCR but I can only record as AVI in Virtual Dub and that would take up a fair whack of hard drive space for a 92 minute movie and I don't have that kind of space. So I want to record in mpeg at 720x576 so I can convert the video straight to DVD vob format afterwards ready to be put onto DVD. But I need to get around this stupid PATHETIC
720x480 problem in Ulead somehow as it makes the edges of the picture look a bit rough. I was wondering if there's at least any good capture programs that can capture in 720x576 mpeg??? I'm at wits end with this DVD thing as I had to have it done for my uncle ages ago and been unable to because of these pathetic problems
.
If anyone can help me solve this problem then I'd be one happy man.
Cheers

Buy a settop DVD recorder that has Firewire inputs! (Mine's a Pioneer PVR-9000). Works great, just about realtime.

I've taken my DV .AVI and put it directly in DVDit PE. DVDit PE will encode it. But the file size is still pretty large. I can only get about 45mins of 720 x 480 on a DVD... This works well for the short cartoons my son watches on the DVD player in the minivan...

hey u can try and get the wintv pvr 250 it can do real time mpg2,mpg, it has svideo input, composite, and a tuner. i think that's the cheapest and best quality you can get with real time capture. i have the pana standalone recorder and the quality is way below the pvr250.

As source I used DV stream from my camera - 55 minutes long - and final DVD ("best quality DVD" choice) was 4.1 GB big. I put as output unit my dvd recorder and writting was only 1 minute longer as duration of movie (lead out writting process). With this quality setting I couldn't notice visible difference btw. on the fly recording and postencoded DV avi with tmpgenc or similar.
PC speed is important point: with 1G Athlon Thunderbird I got a few frozen frames in movie but with new XP 2500 + everything was perfect.

You're right it is expensive, but it's a prosumer unit. IIWY, I'd get one of those Panny's or the Pioneer DVR-7000, which can prob. be had for $900 on the internet (or you could get a Phillips +R/W unit if you lean in that direction
).
tompika, thanks for bringing it to my attention that the Pioneers aren't labeled on this site as having Firewire, when in fact they actually do. I'll try to rectify that.
