  1. okay, say i have a 698 mb DivX file. (actually i have tons, but we'll get to that)

is it absolutely necesarry that i convert it to mpeg, split it into 2 parts, then burn?

what about just clicking Video CD in nero, and dragging the avi file on? will this work? why or why not?

is it possible to fit an 820mb divx file on one cd? what is the maximum amount that can be fit on one cd?

    thanks.

  2. VCD is 10MB per minute (approx) the size of the divx is irrelivent it is the time that matters. When burning as VCD you can get approx 800MB(80mins) of data on 1 700MB/80 min CDR. When burning divx to CD as a data file you can get 700MB on 1 disc or a little bit more if you overburn there is no way you will get 820MB on a 700MB CDR. My advise would be not to use Nero to encode it is not very good, use TMPGEnc to encode and then nero or VCDeasy to author and burn.

  3. many, in fact most, actually almost ALL movies are 90 minutes and over! how do i go about burning these?

  4. If you use TMPGENc to encode the DIVX to MPEG-1, you can also use TMPGENc to split the MPEG file.

If you're using 80 min CDs, then you'll have to put the last 10 minutes on a second disc. Or you can split it so it's 45/45min.

  5. You would have to split them over 2 discs. When you encode with TMPGEnc you can select a source range so you could select to encode the first half of the movie and then the second half so you have 2 seperate files. Or you can encode it all in one go and then use TMPGEnc split facility to cut the file in half (this is the method I use). Another option you have is to make an XVCD this is a non standard VCD and as such is less compatible than regular a VCD, you would have to check that your player could play XVCD. The way this works is to lower the bitrate below that of a standard VCD so that the whole movie would fit on 1 disc. You can use a bitrate calculator to find out what bitrate you would need to use for a certain length movie to keep it under 800MB. With this method you can expect to lose quality over that of a standard VCD due to the lower bitrate.

  6. i was under the impression that the majority of large movie files are around 700mb because that is the limit that cds are capable of handling. oh well.

  7. Yes 700MB is the limit for DIVX files written as data (mode1) but you can get 800MB written as VCD (mode2)
