  1. Hi everyone,

I'm a bit of a newbie so bear with me! I just got a DVD+R/RW drive and I want to put some of my videos onto a DVD to play in my set top DVD. Most of them are windows media video, file extension .wmv. My problem is that the programs I have to put them onto DVD don't accept this type of file. Whats the best (simple!) program to use to put these files onto a DVD, preferably without having to convert them?

I would also like to put some menu's in there as well. If you can suggest a few programs that would be great as I'm in the UK so the shops round here might not have them all!

    Thanks for your time

I am not sure if TMPGEnc handle WMV files or not.

Give it a try. It is an excellent convertor.

  3. As was mentioned above TMPGenc is what I use to convert them too, I convert to MPEG1 352 by 240 by 48Khz audio (NTSC in my case) or if I was PAL 352 by 288 by 48Khz audio. Or in my case depending on the resolution MPEG2 352 by 480 or 720 by 480 both with 48Khz audio.

Whether you convert them and then add them or add them and the DVD program converts them they have to be at supported types MPEG1 or MPEG2 and resolutions that are supported by DVD Players. WMV format isn't supported thus they need conversion. Generally The Encoders in the DVD Author program won't be able to give as good a results as doing it externally.

The good news is that you can do batch conversions with TMPGENc. I start it at night before bed, set it to shut off the computer when done. In the morning I turn off the power strip and that evening I author the DVD using the TMPGenc DVD program and burn. In Fact I just converted 100 old WMV format files last evening, authored two DVDs today and have some left over files for next run to be authored.

    Good Luck and Cheers

to use a wmv file in tmpgenc simply change the .wmv extension of the file to .asf and it will accept them
