  1. I would like to capture from my ATI TV Wonder TV tuner to an SVCD-ready MPEG-2. Here's my set up:

    Windows XP
    ATI TV Wonder PCI
    ATI MMC v7.9
    PowerVCR II 3.0
    Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2

With either MMC or PowerVCR, I cannot create a template to capture at 480x480, it's just not available. I can capture to AVI with VirtualVCR in 480x480, but I don't want to have to encode to MPEG separately (quality is not the biggest issue, I just want better than VCD...speed of creation is the priority). For the same reason I don't want to capture at some other resolution and wait for MF2 to convert it.

Is there a simple something I'm missing to set the 480x480 resolution in either MMC or PowerVCR? Can someone recommend another capture app to look at if one of these can't do it? If you recommend something else, it needs to have a recording scheduler.

    Thanks in advance,
    SBB

Try Ulead Video Studio 7, it has SVCD template.
Quality is not so bad for real time encoding.
FYI: My 2GHz Athlon XP runs at about 90% CPU.

With PowerVCR you can go into the registry and add the 480 x 480 resolution to your templates.

But I would always advise capturing at a higher resolution and bitrate then encoding to SVCD.
You will get better results in my humble opinion.
And by capturing straight to SVCD you will not get better quality than a well encoded VCD.

Read the guide in my signature. Alter your resolution to 480x480 and bitrate to about 2.5 MB/S VBR. And ignore the DVD software part of the guide.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

I learned a lot from your guide - it is very useful and informative. However when I try to change to the custom capture settings in MMC, I don't have 480x480 (or even 352x480) to choose from. I have nothing over nnnx240.

    Here is a screen shot.

Any ideas how to "unlock" these higher resolutions?

  6. I found a solution with a little more digging around - found an ATI MMC registry tool in the 'Tools' section that lets me change the resolution of the custom profiles. Says it's for MMC 7.6/7.7 but seems to work ok with 7.9. Also found registry hack for PowerVCR that allows other custom resolutions, so for now I am happy.
