  1. When I try to burn an SVCD with the latest Nero software 5.5,andWindows XP. I get the error message "due to patent license restrictions, the mpeg2 encoding/converting is not available. To add this possibility please purchase the nero mpeg2 codec plugin at www.nero.com"
    I downloaded the codec from
    http://home.wanadoo.nl/gamecopyfreak/content/files.html
and it installed successfully. I still however get the same message. Any help would be terrrific.

Hope you get a reply as I have just ordered and paid $40 for the same plugin from Nero having had the same messages when trying to burn an SVCD in Nero.

What on earth gave you the impression that a CD writing app is suitable as an MPEG encoder? (Or even used to author (S)VCD?) For best results, use the right tool: a hammer to drive nails, an axe to chop wood, an mpeg encoder to encode to mpeg (and Nero to write stuff to CD-R)!

  4. You only need the Nero plugin to convert a file to SVCD (and TMPEng Plus is a better bet for this). You don't need it to burn an SVCD using Nero.

Thanks for reply. My files are already encoded to SVCD and, as I have been using Nero to burn my VCDs with no trouble, was wanting to use Nero to burn my SVCDs and was given the message about needing the plugin. Think that was what the original message was also about.

If your files are already SVCD, and Nero complains that
due to patent license restrictions, the mpeg2 encoding/converting is not available
it sure is related to Nero trying to reencode the mpeg. It will never be any patent license involved taking an mpeg and authoring that as a SVCD. No way. But there is a licens involved in the creation of an mpeg. Turn off Neros compliance check to make it accept the mpegs you laboured to create in the first place, or use VCDEasy for authoring, and then Nero to burn.

  7. Are you sure your source file is actually SVCD? I once made the mistake of multiplexing with TMPEng set to MPEG2 Program instead of MPEG2 SVCD. Trying to write that with Nero, Nero then prompted me to convert it to SVCD, which it couldn't do because I didn't have the plugin.

Don't know what the difference is, but having an MPEG2 of the right resolution doesn't necessarily make it an SVCD compatible file.

Definitely SVCDs. Used Smart Ripper to rip and DVDX to encode to SVCD. Will just have to wait for my $40 worth from Nero!

  9. Joyn-Let me know how you make out. I installed the MPEG2 Plugin successfully (finally) and I no longer get the same error message. Now what happens is When attempting to burn a svcd with nero, when I hit "write" . The movie goes in the file window, then immediately jumps up in the larger window and says "done" but it isnt done. Any ideas, like is there better buning software for SVCD's than Nero.

Sorry for jumping all over this thread, but I can't resist. Nero is very good for writing stuff to CD. It's not top notch (did you notice the understatement?) when it comes to authoring of (S)VCD. It's even some marks below that, when it comes to creating MPEGs suitable for (S)VCDs.
Once you have an MPEG to your liking, use VCDEasy to author and create the (S)VCD image. Then, if you (or your CD writer) don't like VCDEasys built in CD writing capabilities, use Nero to burn this image.

Have tried VCDEasy v1.0.5 but it does not like my CD Writer (WP1 CDRW-4424) and will not burn SVCDs. Have not tried it with VCDs as Nero 5.5.9.8 burns them superbly. Will let you know how my plugin from Nero works but may have to wait some time as it is on CD and may take some time to arrive.

Then, if you (or your CD writer) don't like VCDEasys built in CD writing capabilities, use Nero to burn this image.
You're not forced to use VCDEasy for the actual burning - just create the image by unchecking the Simulate and Burn checkboxes.

Then use the Burn Image option under the File menu in Nero (or any other CD writing soft that knows how to write cue/bin and likes your hardware!), select the cue file you just created (videocd.cue) to write the image to disc. The best of both worlds.

Thanks a million Mats. That worked beautifully - did not know about 'burn image' in Nero. Now have my first 3 great SVCD discs. Now, how about a cure for the pain caused by my sending $40 to Nero when I didn't have to! Thanks again.

Glad that it worked for you both. People seem to see the VCD/SVCD option in Nero, and think that this is the Answer to all my questions. It's not, as you have noticed!

  16. Well, I'm confused by this, because I've done dozens if not hundreds of SVCDs from different sources in Nero and never once had any problem with it.

I think the general confusion starts at the point where Nero isn't all that obvious about the fact that it's found the mpeg not to be compliant, and is going to reencode.
I can't count the complaint in the line of "My mpeg looks perfect, but after authoring and burning it as (S)VCD with Nero it looks like crap". When asked, noone seems to be aware that Nero must have been reencoding (this could be the only cause for the (S)VCD to look worse than the mpeg it's made from) - refusing to believe it even. As I don't know how to persuade Nero to take my judgement as to how an mpeg suitable for (S)VCD should look like, and my DVD player refuses to even start playing a VCD authored with Nero, I usually recommend other (free) software.
