Is there any reason to run pulldown.exe on an encoded movie, either progressive, or interlaced, if the movie is normally 29.97 fps? From what i've read it is just used for movies that are normally 23.97, but I have had some problems using DVD2SVCD's advanced settings to create back-ups of DVD's. I usually get a "pulldown.mpv" file, and an "encoded.mpv" file, on a recent interlaced movie I did, I didn't have the "pulldown.mpv" file for some reason, and I couldn't import chapters into Maestro because of an "I-Frame" error. Would someone please tell me if there is any reason to use pulldown on an encoded movie, if the current movie is 29.97 already?? And to use Pulldown.exe, do you need to know dos prompts, or can u just add like a regular program? Thanks in advance.

DON'T use pulldown if the movie is 29.97fps. Pulldown is only needed if your file has a framerate of 23.976fps. Also, make sure that your encoded file is a MPEG-2. (SVCD, CVD, or DVD).
Hope That Helps!!!:P

PR138 is correct, but there are virtually NO movies that are not 24fps offerings. You should endeavour to REMOVE the 3:2 pulldown from a 29.97fps video BEFORE encoding (this allows you to allocate 25% more bitrate per frame). Once the 3:2 PD is removed and the video encoded, then you apply the 2:3 PULLDOWN back to give yourself a 29.97fps movie.
I am assuming that you are capturing video from a broadcast. If these are DVD's then you are going about your conversion all wrong (but don't worry, your method still works). If you are doing home videos, then ignore all of what I said and continue the way you have been - it is the correct way for home movies (if filmed at 29.97fps). -
thank you both for the response. PuertoRican, that info will be helpful.
@SLK, maybe I am missing something because I use DVD2AVI to tell me if the film is interlaced or progressive. I can see the fps in DVD DECRYPTOR. When I put the movie and load up Decryptor, I see it show 30fps on the bottom. Then when I put it into DVD2AVI and hit F5, I see it show whether it is progressive or interlaced, and then it shows the actual fps at 29.97. The new Austin Powers (Goldmember) shows 29.97, not 23.97. So using Goldmember as an example, which isn't a good example, because I can fit that on one DVD-R stripping extras with IFOedit, but I'm just saying that movie because it shows it as 29.97fps. My question is, let's suppose that movie was 8GB's and I needed to encode. I understand what you posted, but I have never done it or used pulldown.exe or that force film thing..not sure what that is either..lol..only used those in DVD2SVCD, but I think they go hand in hand. But with that example, what would I need to do? I'm confused with all the flags and 3:2 and 2:3 and pulldown.exe, etc...can I just download pulldown.exe and load up the output .M2V file into it? Or does it use some type of Dos Prompt? I do appreciate your time and help on this. -
When you use dvd2avi, when you press F5 it plays the movie, let it play a while and if it is over %50 film, then enable "force film". When you save the project the .d2v will be 23.976 fps, this takes out the interlacing so that you don't have to deinterlace. But 23.976 fps is not compatible with SVCD or DVD, so you need to convert it to 29.97, doing so in TMPGEnc will create a jumpy file. That is why you use pulldown.exe. You can download it in the tools section of this website. If you don't want to use commands download the GUI as well (also in the tools).
Hope this helps -
On any DVD from a theatrical release, always use FORCE FILM under VIDEO > FRAME OPERATION. This will strip out the current 3:2 pulldown FLAGS, and give you a 23.976 true progressive video. Encode as usual - notice that you are allocating your bitrate over only 24 frames instead of 30, so each frame gets 25% more bits when encoding. Once encoded, reset the PULLDOWN FLAGS by running the program DivXExpert mentioned.
NOTE: Always strip out studio intro videos (and FBI warnings) before the DVD2AVI step, because they are usually rendered directly to 29.97 and thus cannot be PD'ed. -
thanks divxExpert for the 411. I think that should be enough info with the other responses for me to at least expieriment with this functions. I do have one question, when you say run the movie through DVD2AVI, do you mean that I should check at least "50%" of the film, and make sure it is 29.97 through at least half? Are you saying that some of the film could be 23.97 and some of it could be 29.97? I thought once the film started and it showed you the fps and whether it was interlaced or not, that I would be able to just know right away. Again, thanks for the info, I will experiment.

SLK, thanks again for the reply. I have been using DVD2SVCD's advanced functions for DVD's "Theatrical Movies." Can I still do all of the things you mention in your posts? I mean, DVD2AVI, Pulldown.exe, etc..do their own thing. Don't those programs with DVD2SVCD strip out the current 3:2 pulldown Flags anyway? I have always gotten a (pulldown.MPV) video file which I import into Maestro with the .AC3 file. But once or twice, I get a file titled "encoded.mpv" which I always get too, but I use the "pulldown.mpv" file. The thing is that there was no file titled "pulldown.mpv" with my last movie using DVD2SVCD. I was thinking it may have something to do with it being "interlaced" and not progressive, but I don't know. But are you saying that I can just take that "encoded.MPV" file DVD2SVCD outputs and run that file through PULLDOWN.EXE? I've dl'd the app and the GUI as you said. There are a ton of options like setting progressive for true and output file, ..etc..etc. If you would just tell me if I can or can't add that "ENCODED.MPV" file to pulldown, I would appreciate it. If so, I would assume it was encoded at 29.97, or does "force film" change that by itself to 23.37? And if it does, are you saying the only thing I need to do at the VERY END is just run that final .MPV file through Pulldown.exe to bring it back up to 29.97? Thanks once again for your time & assistance.
