loveo all,
I have followed the steps to capture SVCD’s with the AIW 128 card. Settings 480x480 2.4 bit rate, interlaced motion @ 99. When saved it saves as .mp2. As it states in the forum I rename the file to .m2p to do demux/remux with TMPG 12i, but when I browse to the folder were the .m2p file is located it’s not there, unless I select all files. Can anyone help me out with this? I don’t know why TMPG doesn’t recognize the file???????????????
Any help will be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try saving the .mp2 file as an .mpg file instead of m2p. When the AIW finishes its capture and attempts to save the .mp2 file you can change it at this point to .mpg. This will eliminate the step of having to rename the file.

next- about your audio sync problems- i think i've figured it out. it's all in the VBR/CBR and bitrate. if you take bitrate viewer and look at the files it makes, the allocation is ridiculous. and when it jumps too high for too long, there goes sync. i tried doing an SVCD at 2.27 VBR, and got as high as 3.40Mbps peaks. the average was a pathetic 1.65 Mbps and the picture was marginal. however, i redid it at CBR 2.24, and the peak was under 2.55, and the min was ~1.86, the picture was clearly superior, and the sync was solid. (the picture at 1.650 was actually a lot better than i expected from seeing that bitrate though, as a letterboxed 2hr flick made it on 2cd's with room to spare, but i'm after quality so i can leave my vcr and vhs's at home when i move in a couple months.)

loveo all,
I was unable to edit the save to field on MMC 7.1 to .mpg. Is there another way to change the extension from .mp2 to mpg??????????
What am I missing??????????????

Patrick - thanks for the concern. As it turns out it more than what you suggest. I agree about your VBR comments and the AIW though. I pretty much use CBR exclusively now. ATI needs to have a minimum bit rate setting for VBR.
The problem as it turns out is pretty common for AIW users -and others too. I'm not sure if my analysis is correct but when I do an mpeg2 capture and I try to demux it in TMPG there are 4 streams. A video stream, an audio stream, a padded stream, and a private stream. The last one I mention, the "private stream" is the one that causes all of the problems. TMPG for example ignores this private stream when it demuxes. The result is a horribly out of sync file. The only program that I have found that addresses this "private stream" is M2-edit. And there are two distinct ways of using it for VBR and CBR. It can be tricky but it works. And its fast. Really fast.
Try doing an mpeg2 capture and see if you have this "private stream" when you try to do a demux in TMPG. If you do then demux the private stream and look at the size. It will demux to a .dat file. If its a really small .dat file then you shouldn't have any sync problems. And if you're really lucky you won't even have this "private stream" at all.
My best guess is that this private stream is used to compensate for the many types of hardware and PC setups out there. Different sound cards, operating systems, chipsets, hard drives, bios, bios setups etc, etc. It fixes A/V sync problems within the ATI MMC 7.1 suite of programs. But when you start running AIW mpeg2 captures through other programs this "private stream" causes problems. If you have no A/V sync problems then you are one of the lucky ones. There are a few.
But as I mentioned I found a simple and quick workaround. So things are good.

just right click on the file and change .mp2 to .mpg. or do it when you're saving. the "MP2" means nothing except what program runs when you doubleclick. you can call it .crap and it's still an MPEG-2. in TMPG just type the name of the file you have, or browse to it with "all files" as type. you can change the extensions of what files you demux to as well, they don't have to be the ones it suggests. what's in the files is important, not there names. there isn't any more to it than that.
anyway, i usually get the private stream, but in my test just now it was 29k for ~1min of SVCD MPEG-2. i know it's there, but never had anything to manipulate it with. next time i do a longer capture i'll let you know how big it is, but i've already tossed those files.

Thanks for the reply Patrick,
I already renamed the extension, but after it was saved it didn’t show up when I browsed for it. And yes I did do all files and selected the mpeg file but TMPG gives me an error message that it’s an illegal mpeg. After doing this, is when I posted my problem. Next replied that I should change the extension to .mpg when AIW asks how would you like to save this file. Perhaps I am having a problem with my capture?
480x480
2.4 bitrate
Interlaced no masking
VBR
Mpeg2
Motion @ 99
So as I stated, TMPG gives me an Illegal mpeg message when I try to open it.
I must be missing something.
